At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

It'll be interesting to see what the next generation brings. As it stands, the only cards with more than 16GB VRAM are:

5090
4090
3090 Ti
3090
7900 XTX
7900 XT

We could add a potential 5000-series Titan or 5090 Ti to that list, and maybe a 5080 Super and/or Ti.

It could be a long while before developers can depend on being able to leverage more than 16GB VRAM :p

I think with price, expectations are going to vary.

If I was spending £1200+ on a 5080 I would expect more than 16GB of VRAM.
If I was spending £450 (estimate) on a 5060 I would expect more than 8GB of VRAM

Games like Resident Evil 4 needs 10GB of VRAM for high settings at 1080p. That is a game that launched in 2023. The Intel Arc B580 has 12GB of VRAM and I think that is appropriate for a card with that performance at that price point. Nvidia cards just don't have VRAM commensurate with their performance or price.

I now only buy the previous years models at vastly reduced prices. let others pay the current gen adopter tax, my 3090 does everything I currently need. Am I missing out on the latest tech and equipment, sure, but latest isnt always greatest

If I went into a shop and they wanted to charge me £10 for a Mars bar it would be too expensive and I wouldn't buy one. I could afford the £10 though.

Not if that Mars Bar was the only food available and was a nice upgrade from the rice cakes you were eating for the last couple of years

Exactly this, its a case of want. Do I need x product? Most likely a no. Do I want it? Well thats a different question.

Above being said I dont do debt (other than those that cant be avoided such a a mortgage), so I stand firm with It's only too expensive if i can't afford it :-)

The thing is the Mars Bar isn't the only food available.

In this increasingly stretched analogy, the Mars Bar is £10 but I can get an Aldi Neptune Bar for £1.

This is why I am veering at present to getting an Intel B580. I could and would spend twice as much on a GPU but I don't see the value. I had been considering getting a 5070.

You could double down and say well a car is a car, do I need the new x model, or the prestige sports car when I could buy a 10 year old Fiat 500 (other brands are available) for £500, gets you to where your going etc etc.

As I said, all falls into the 'Want' and if you can afford it.

My limit went up to £400max when I got a 3060ti and it's stayed there. That feels like a sensible amount for me, value wise.

Can I afford a £2,000 card? Yes. Do I think that's good value? No.

The other thing for me is that quality is now so good on medium settings that I see little benefit in going for max. There's not that incentive of needing to upgrade to play the newest games.

As demonstrated here the price spikes are being obscured. Nvidia are selling the 5070 as a 5080 and the 5060 as a 5070.
This release definitely felt like they planned filler cards. The 5080 Super/Ti will be the actual successor to the 4080.

Current 5080 is terrible value. You can expect to pay more each gen with inflation, etc. but the performance shouldn't match the previous gen.

2k is crazy for a graphics card- btu hten so is 400 for a motherboard.
at this sort of point you might as well get an xbox + ps5 pro and upgrade that regularly - youll save money and probably have a better gaming experience.
the intel ones look good for the transcoders out there so long as things like plex support it.

£400 when the 3060ti was released is £500 in today's money
i paid 450 for my vega64 way back when, don't care what that is equivalent to in todays money but 400, maybe stretching to 450 if there's game codes is my hard limit for a gpu. i'm still rocking the vega64 as nothing in my price segment has been worth upgrading to imo.

Ssshhhh we're supposed to bow down and worship the people who spend £2k+ on a GPU!

You won't get a better gaming experience, but it's certainly good enough for 99% of people myself included and I fully understand why people would move towards consoles. You can get the top PS5 with stand and Drive and have hundreds (over 1k in the case of a 5090) left to spend on games.

My reason for buying a 5090 is when the 4090 came out I couldn't afford it so I bought a 4080, sold that on the mm and put that and money I saved up for two years selling pc items and so on, I don't drink or smoke and I've been married for over 30 years so we're is the fun in my life.
