At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

On how much is too much, I think it depends on my financial situation at the time.

I generally do a full computer change out every 6/7 years, I don't do much upgrading inbetween bar maybe storage or a peripheral. I put £50 away a month for my next computer straight after buying the components for my latest so I have a reasonably big budget for my next computer. However if I find by the next full upgrade that for me to build a top end PC is going to exceed what I've saved up, even by £100 I'm out, I'll buy a playstation for my gaming needs and just use my computer for work which doesn't require anything more than a basic mini pc.

The GPU is the most expensive part of the computer however, CPUS & Motherboards are getting wild expensive as well. RAM & Storage are reasonable, PSU's are reasonable (unless you want to spend unreasonable amounts) but the GPUs, CPUs & Motherboards are getting very expensive at the high end.

I just think it is sad that people are continuing at the moment to fuel ridiculous pricing. To those who think well if you don't buy the top end they'll stop making them - Great then ignorance is bliss because I won't miss it or even consider something that doesn't exist. Better for everyone as prices get driven down. It will force programmers to optimise better for the hardware as well.

The whole PC market is going in a dangerous trend with pricing and eventually, if it has not already, a gaming PC will become a much more niche market. That's bad for everyone.

Previous to my 7900xtx I'd never spent north of ~£500 on a GPU but my 2070 Super was showing its age and I could afford it so spent the money for the AMD offering - an equivalent Nvidia GPU would've been a chunk more at the time so glad I went back to team red.

Will hopefully keep this card a few generations and I don't plan on upgrading to 4k as I recently got a 34" 1440p monitor so enjoying using that!

I guess it depends on the games you play and what you are prepared to accept in terms of fps and quality. For me I dont need RT or ultra settings [ my eyes are long beyond the point i'd even notice ]

I'll probably buy a 5090, But I've a MSI Suprim x 3090 and a Rog Strix 4090 to chop in if I do so the upgrade wont be as painful as starting from scratch.

I paid £650 for my 3080FE so theres no reality I was paying £969 for a 5080FE.

If I had nothing I would pay around the same, but would pay a bit more if I could sell my 3080 and it was a significant jump.

I completely agree, but the fact you have people camping outside retailers to buy a card tells me this wont happen any time soon.

its a shame really.

You could double down and say well a car is a car, do I need the new x model, or the prestige sports car when I could buy a 10 year old Fiat 500 (other brands are available) for £500, gets you to where your going etc etc.

As I said, all falls into the 'Want' and if you can afford it.
That isn't the point being made.

It’s also down to principal, not just affordability.

I do it for all purchases, big and small. I.e. I wouldn't buy a £10 mars bar, (even if I really wanted one) nothing to do with affordability, but because I believe that to be overpriced so would just refuse to get one and go without.

Same principal applies to PC part purchases.

This release definitely felt like they planned filler cards. The 5080 Super/Ti will be the actual successor to the 4080.

Current 5080 is terrible value. You can expect to pay more each gen with inflation, etc. but the performance shouldn't match the previous gen.
Inflation is one thing, but £649 for a 3080 compared to £969 for a 5080FE is a ridiculous increase.

It's infuriating. It's like their previous cards are suddenly useless and they absolutely have to have the newest thing.

Fair, even if it was an actual X080 tier card, the price increase is a bit much, but worse given it's more like a 5070.

The artificial stock limitation and AIB and retail partners taking advantage doesn't help either. Very few will get anything close to MSRP. I'd like to upgrade now but I'd rather not encourage this pricing.
