Atheists & agnositcs: How do you view religious people?

Clearly you have no idea about the proposed theories then. How did 'God' get there? From nothing?

Indeed proposed theories such as the multi-verse and quantum potential filled vacuums and such like.

The thing about God is that as Thomas Aquinas tried to prove by logic the possibility of creation from nothing it throws up a myriad of problems both mathematically and philosophically, his answer was that a Supreme Being standing outside of time and space endowed the Universe into existence and interfered in it's progression every now and then.

The same is true of the uncertainty proposed by quantum physics, we do not know how something came from nothing, there is no evidence to support any specific hypothesis and as such agnosticism is the only logical position to take at this time, anything else is based on Faith, be it religious or not.

There are two ways i think about it.

1) Religious people are stupid.

2) Religious people are weak.

The stupid bit is classic, and so no need to go into that.

The reason religious people are weak is because they 'believe' in a god. I simply cannot understand that anyone would worship god, even if he is real?

Lets say god is real, why would you not eat pork? why would you go to church, why would you do anything god told you? Look at the worlds religious beliefs, they are quite simply retarded.

Hooray for bigotry and closed-mindedness. You must be a lovely person.

Surely God would have the ability to manipulate the very laws that allow his mathematics to even work. So that seems like an epic dead end to even begin to entertain.

But why declare yourself agnostic only on religious matters? surely you're agnostic to santa claus, the tooth fairy, Thor, Ra and an endless list of other things that you know actually don't exist but can't prove that they don't.

Just look at the short sendoff anyone who posts about aliens or 9/11 conspiracies get.

Why is the stuff the religious people say any different?

Because religion deals with the metaphysical, which inherently cannot be tested empirically, while conspiracy theories are usually empirically testable and exist solely to affirm the prejudices of CTs.

:p

You have no idea what an Atheist is.
Atheists are in line with scientists so we believe in a Big Bang or imploding Universe or whatever this weeks idea is.
We don't however believe that God did it because that is too stupid.

I don't get it but it's rude to dis-respect people's beliefs. I accept that religion has done a lot of bad, but you have to balance that with the good and a great many people right now get a lot of comfort from it.

I don't understand why they do but they're happy, who am I to say that's wrong?

ps. I just got real beans and a grinder, I still believe in the 'crema' but I've yet to see one - maybe I am religious after all ;)

Isn't that what the picture suggests?

As aforementioned, it was lighthearted and I obviously don't share the sentiment with the bit about dinosaurs.

Why is it stupid exactly??...

So what about religious scientists? My aforementioned Christian housemate just graduated from a degree in theoretical physics and is now doing a PhD; I'd hardly call him stupid. Science and religion are not mutually exclusive.

I judge all people by their behaviour, not their beliefs, hence a significant minority of both theists and atheists are bigoted, intolerant and misguided from where I sit.

In a perfect world everyone would be the same...hell i dont agree with what the hindhu's for instance believe in ie gods that are depicted as monkeys, elephants etc etc but do i call them stupid or deluded??...no because quite frankly thats what they believe in so let them,...they arent harming anyone as far as im concerned and neither do i harm anyone with my beliefs.

Why would God want or need to do that. If a God created the Universe or the conditions for the creation of the Universe then those mathematical laws that we have would be consistent with the universe in which we live, not consistent with some proposed Godhead that created them for the explicit purpose of a self perpetuating Universe.

This is my problem with the average atheist, they are unwilling to entertain any conjecture or discussion that doesn't fit within their comfortable world-view, this is also true of the average theist.

We are all atheist about some things, Christians are Brahma-atheists, Muslims are Thor-atheists, I am Santa Claus-atheist, which is why the "are you agnostic about fairies" rejoinder is just stupid.

This, with the addition that I would not take kindly to those that discriminate on others based on their beliefs.

For example, Christians may believe whatever they like, but I will openly oppose any claim that homosexuals are evil.

Right back at you. I totally agree with your additional point.

Also, I used to help out at a kids christian holiday week every summer and several times there were examples of kids basically being told that if you didn't believe in God then you were not a good person. That's not on, every person has the right to choose without being made to feel inadequate.

My choice is that religion is not for me.
