ATI Catalyst 8.11 Released

i dont get the 8.12 about steam. every user of ati 4000 series gains ability to run steam applications?

can u explain it to me.

i think we can run applications with 4000 series already intact with all the cards? or im missing something

idle to load temps on a X2 tend to be much more significant than on a single 4xxx card, understandably. Mine would idle 60-65 and load get to the 90-95c mark. However, the memory is always 10-15c higher than the main core temp they show you and the shader core temp is usually 10C higher also so 90-95C load can infact mean 110 on the mem or shader core and wasn't stable for me.

First I would say if you're on Vista and getting the VPU recover a lot disable Aero, certain games seem to do better with themes disabled, not sure why and if its mostly dual screen people, worked for me with dual screen setup.

if that doesn't work, setting the fan speed higher in the overdrive section might do you good, that also dropped my temps significantly though increased noise a lot, while you can turn it down idle to be inaudible again it was a pain so I whipped the shroud off and stuck a 120mm fan on, silent, far far cooler and completely stable now.

its not steam, its STREAM , with an "R".

To be honest I haven't read up about it or recall what it is but you would assume its their GPGPU style coding thing, like Nvidia's Cuda platform. Lending support to non graphical, or non game usage of the gpu core to offload work from the cpu, or to speed it up.

Though afaik the photoshop support that Nvidia widely advertised while trying to make it sound like an Nvidia only thing, is already working on ATi cards isn't it? Maybe just more official support for that and the official stream thing working, don't know.

I wanna know where they are gonna enable this direct connection (sideport) between GPU's that was promised.
If they dont they are kind of ripping us off as it is part of the specs and meant to be a big improvement over the system my old 3870x2 used.

I'll have to look into my at load temps tonight running GPU-Z or something in the background. Suspect it is an overheating problem as I'm at 56-60 idle (so that's 70 on the memory) before I've even started! This is on XP with a single core card. I'd always thought overheating would manifest itself in gfx corruption first though, whereas everything for me seems normal until the VPU screen suddenly pops up.

What's even stranger is that it only ever does this once. If I alt-tab, clear the vpu recover screen, alt-tab back to the game I can play for hours then without seeing it again. Which makes no sense whatsoever to me!

after installing these last night..my computer messed up...windows would boot but just loop at the vista progress bar...

Luckily system restore sorted things out for me...

The 4870x2 is already a big improvement over the 3870x2 crossfire wise. The micro stutter has been shown to almost not exist with the 4 series x2 where as it was supposed to be at its worst on the 3870x2. I think if nvidia bring something really fast to the table ati will enable it to give that little extra. Ati stated that the x2 was to be faster than 4870 crossfire which is not the case in most games could this be because they left the sideport disabled maybe maybe not we shall see. Some people say its not enabled because there was not really any big gains with it enabled apart from power and heat but its all rumor until its enabled in drivers.

ATI CrossFireX™ Enhancements
This release of ATI Catalyst™ enables users to verify whether an application is
running in ATI CrossFireX™ mode. The new option found in the ATI Catalyst™
Control Center system tray, will allow users to verify whether a Direct3D or
OpenGL application is running in ATI CrossFireX™ mode. (The “ATI Cross-
FireX” logo will be shown on screen when the application is running).
How do you get this to work? Any Ideas?

Loaded lovely on my Quad core Crossfire set up running XP SP3. Benched a fraction higher than the 8.10s but yet to test in game, Will post back once I've been on a few servers etc.
colour seems more vibrant but then I Always think that after a Driver change :p

I've been under the impression you couldn't use more than 2 GPUs in XP due to it only supporting a max of 2 AFR devices. Has that changes recently or has that never been the case?

I had a whole heap of trouble getting these drivers installed last night. I was sat there thinking 'this is justice for me going on about how I have never had trouble with ATI drivers'..

Then I realised I had downloaded the XP64 rather than the Vista64 driver pack. :o

Ati icon in task bar/Right click on it for Extra options. You can allocate a certain card to a certain Piece of screen etc, Is that what you mean ?

Not had set up long so maybe before I had Quad there was Issues but I haven't come across any, Maybe it was SP3 that sorted it, Dunno tbh.
