ATI to implement 3xGPUs's

Yawn...

GFX cards are getting on my nerves now its just getting beyond a joke!

lol :D

Same here, all sorts of **** happening now to get you to spend more money, the only person who's gona be able to afford a new graphics card will be Abramovich (sp) before long.

So let me get this straight. In order to play pc games at top details - I will have to buy a crossfire rig and not be able to sell my current card and use it as a ppu?

I am ordering an xbox360 if this turns out true.

you know, it goes round and round and round in circles but what do people learn from it? nothing.

people said the same thing about mpeg2 cards. Not needed, outrage, i shouldnt have to buy a seperate card ect ect. Now what's happened to them? they are integrated into gpu's and you people dont batter an eyelid at it now.

The same thing happens whenever a new tech is released - same old arguemnts. To make advances you have to have push new technologies to the market, and not all of them are going to be easy to swallow.

Heh - I think I will have to dissagree with you on that one - I think they release the tech so that they can milk more money out of the big spenders. I don't believe for a moment that this hardware can't be optimised in the lab and released in a resonable state. I also don't believe that they don't have the tech to integrate all of these things into one card, and if they don't they shouldn't be releasing so much pap.

computer cases and motherboards need to be much bigger i think. 4 graphics cards leaves no room for a sound card or something. Id be lost without my x-fi. I bet in a year or two cases will be massive

It also goes on how the motherboard is layed out. I have crossfire(which I haven't had any problems with)and I have my xfi. I now have no more room for any other cards.

FFS this is geting stupid.

Why not just make ONE awesomely powerful GPU.

Well I believe they've been trying. One simple word. Heat.

Thats the only thing AFAIK that stops companies from making uber big chips. They just generate too much heat.

Back to the discussion...

Liking the idea as you can use a space PCI-E card to do the work. Say you had an X1900 and you upgraded to a X3200 (Or whatever). You can use the X1900 for physics (That reminds me, need to do some revision :P ) and you don't have to sell it :)

dont forget that you need a motherboard with 3 PCI-E 16 slots...
Yeah & do you think there will be any made with 939 cpu socket.. unlikely.
So another mobo a new M2 cpu New ,DD2 ram just so i can slam my older 1800xt in it.
Ageia PhysX card may end up being cheaper in the end. only wish the price comes down soon & it used one of the smaller pcie slots as pci has got to be a bottleneck.

But even the Ageia people are saying that you need SLI or Crossfire to properly support their product. Either way your wallet gets significantly lighter.

The idea is great, however if its just an EFFECT this is a sever limitation in my eyes

this also dispels the rumour that ATI and AMD are going to merge - if the merger WAS on the cards do you think ATI would launch something like this PPU "project" in conjunction with Intel Duo (albeit with AMD launch coming later)........

Why are people getting so upset?

This is physics - it's not your PSU, or your motherboard. Your games will function perfectly without using any of these solutions, so there is no extra expenditure unless you want it. Don't worry about it.

Currently, and for the foreseeable future, physcis will be used for eye candy. You will only need to get the torches and pitchforks out when games require you to have some form of PPU as the physics is an integral part of the gameplay - at the rate software takes advantage of new hardware, that is a long way off imo.

Its not really the same as ppl have crossfire for crossfire.
The Ageia can allows for more onscreen physx but the gfx cards out atm dont have the power to render the extra moveing physx objects onscreen ,so crossfire will help

I'd have to say that I am dubious about that statement. There have been a number of incidences of ATI and NVIDIA suggesting that there is plenty of leeway on the processing power of a GPU to render the 'extra' objects onscreen. The issue lies with the GPU being told where the objects are going to be...
