Atmos worth it?

Agree with dipoles as they are too diffused but bipoles are fine.

Had Bipole sides in my system until recently, did not appreciate how much they masked the atmos speakers till i swapped the sides for monopoles last week.

To be fair I did also add a 2x4HD and do some further room calibration, but the Bipoles are less than ideal even with two rows of seating (which is the reason I got Bipoles in the first place).

A Marantz NR1609. Just a slimline for my modest room.

You really should consider a separate power amp.

That marantz is only rated at 50w per channel (8ohm) with 2 channels driven, so with 7 channels driven you'll be lucky to get 30w per channel when going for it in a film.

A power amp (if your AVR can link into it) will make it sound far superior than just adding more speakers, which will actually do the opposite.

Second hand on avforums is the way to go for these things.

S/h for sure.
Trading on AVForums I’m less sure about. Always find it a bit of a hateful experience.

seller - looking for “some ridiculously large amount” knowing that he’s going to be bargained down
Buyer - “what’s the best price you can do, can only stretch to... some stupid lowball offer

Then followed by some negotiation
Awful ritual that puts me off completely

My cinema room is a 5.1.2 layout with ceiling speakers positioned as per Dolby's recommendation and I love it. It really adds another dimension to the sound field, and more obvious panning effects are great fun.

I went for Kef ceiling speakers as it seemed like a good idea since the rest of my speakers are also Kef. It all blends in nicely.

Got a 7.2.4 setup and just about to move away from Q Acoustic in ceiling to on ceiling speakers.

The location of my joists and pluming above means the current .4 setup is less than ideally spaced apart, plus my current in ceilings have no angled baffles.

Big fan of Emotiva gear, so gone with the Airmotiv e1 for my rear / side and Atmos, good priced speakers with a great sounding ribbon tweeter, they seem well suited for 80Hz crossover positional stuff.

Looking to switch from my Onkyo RZ740 for an Emotiva pre-pro this year and keep my Rotel amps, then when my Arendal Sound 1723s LCR turn up I will be rocking :)

This year should finally see the room in the near end state position I want it.

Would not touch emotiva av pre with a barge pole.

They also have built their power amps with low grade components, plus incompetent when it comes to basic XLR polarity

If I as buying a av pre amp it would be anthem avm70 or monoprice htp-1

Certainly NOT emotica

I expect interface oddity's from a smaller scale maker, just the way it is when you move away from the big players who have stacks of cash to throw at stuff.

Anthem would be an option, but going to wait to see what the next generation of pre-pros are, this year would be nice but i'm in no rush.

Emotiva are buggy as hell, and slow interface. Avoid.
You have been warned.

The power rating on the back of a receiver doesn’t necessarily means its Max power amount, which can make things a bit more complicated.(unless it says Max Power).

Your setup sounds quite tasty. Stick some pics in the stickied thread in this forum :)

You have to REALLY love cinema to put speakers in your ceiling to hear a helicopter or plane go over.

Not worth the expensive and effort, for me personally.

Depends on your room layout and whatnot. Granted for me it was easy as my cinema room is upstairs, so it was a case of routing the wires through the loft and down into the equipment cabinet, but if you're an enthusiast who has dedicated a room to their setup, it's not exactly a giant extra leap.
