Atmos worth it?

S/h for sure.
Trading on AVForums I’m less sure about. Always find it a bit of a hateful experience.

seller - looking for “some ridiculously large amount” knowing that he’s going to be bargained down
Buyer - “what’s the best price you can do, can only stretch to... some stupid lowball offer

Then followed by some negotiation
Awful ritual that puts me off completely

Aye, definitely seen that on AVF, but happens everywhere these days.

Selling some barely used 2nd hand tyres and every message is 'what is your lowest / final price'.

I now just reply 'price is listed in the advert'.

Maybe I'll just be more funny and out in a crazy low number, then when they bite just say that's a deposit with full a amount on collection :D

LOl, no different from the members market on here.

From what I have been reading on t'web and on here, it seems that Atmos may not be the next step for me. I wil see how the FX's go and whether there should be any upgrade after that.

You have to REALLY love cinema to put speakers in your ceiling to hear a helicopter or plane go over.

Not worth the expensive and effort, for me personally.

Much better than that. Massively increased soundstage, prescence, aerial dimension of sound etc.

Again, fine if you don't want to to do it... but to atmos is the way forwards and is now included on most soundtracks and for some films, GREATLY enhances the film.

Then again, some people are happy with a TV and a soundbar so I guess we all just have different priorities and standards for home cinema.

I have had an atmos setup of some form for a while - a very custom setup where I had some satellites sitting on stands behind my floor standers. While it sorta worked, I recently got some dedicated atmos upfiring speakers to sit on top of my FS's, and work much better. Having reconfigured everything, my setup sounding great now.

May not be as good as ceiling speakers, but does make a nice difference.

Upgraded to a Denon 4500x and at the same time got 2 pairs of Dali Alteco C1.
Currently running Tannoy Mercury v3 front, mx3 rear, mx c center and mx sub 10.
Sounds great to me, but I would like to upgrade the sub and center at some point.
Also the fronts could do with swapping out as they are not black like the rest of the speakers.
As mentioned, could do with more content but Neural X does a pretty good job.

After using the three main methods of atmos for 18 months I think it's worth it.

The best method without a doubt is on or in ceiling. The 3d audio is so much more pronounced.

There is a major difference between height and ceiling imo as you don't get objects passing overhead with on wall front and rear heights but you do get a taller sound stage. You can track objects using ceiling speakers very easily.

The upfiring method copies ceiling more than heights but heights are still good and adds a nice room filling sound.

i have found even the cheaper atmos systems (sound bars) are quite amazing.

Personally i have the sound bar setup Sony ZF9 system with the sub and rear speakers working with philips ambilight tv and Hue play lights behind the sofas lighting up wall an immersive experience. Its not a true atmos as it has no up firing speakers, but as its software based it will try convert any hd or 4k input into atmos and excuse to re-watch everything.

atmos with phillips hue i highly recommend, scared myself a few times lol..... noise of knocking on the wall behind you so checked out the window and then when on the tv show someone using a torch towards you, my play lights lit up the interior wall & window made me jump

It's not always like that. The site was much better around 10 years ago. Seems abit dead these days, but you do get some good sellers and friendly people.

I have a very old (but still very good) amp which can do dolby digital.

Is it worth me upgrading to a modern amp that can give me Atmos ?

Was thinking of the Sony tr-dn1080 but just not sure its worth it.

If you have the right space and placement for your ceiling speakers then it could be. I would look at the latest atmos list to see how many films have atmos tracks these days.
