Attack on NI military base

Let me preface this by saying I don't know a huge amount about the politics surrounding Ireland.

But why don't the authorities just smash the IRA totally? It's an illegal terrorist group after all. If Al-Qaeda carried out these attacks the response would have been enormous.
 
What will be achieved from this I don't know. Pointless waste of life.

The "Real IRA" need to wise themselves up and concentrate on selling drugs to kiddies

I think with the small size of theese dissident groups such as rira and cira, it's much more difficult for the security forces to gather any intelligence on their activities, unlike the provisional ira which was a much larger organisation, therefore more prone to infiltration and intelligence gathering from informants.

Unlikely. Most likely is that since the end of OP Banner the UK forces in NI have become rather lax in their drills to conceal who they are and what they do making themselves much easier targets. You're in the region so you should know that news of a few idiots wanting to stir up trouble again is not new news, there are regular pop shots made against the PSNI. Problem is this news rarely makes it over to UK mainland so now the news that 2 servicemen killed has come about people over here are dramatising stories about the resurgence of IRA terrorist activities. The reality is that one or two lunatics want to stir up the trouble when the rest of them are pretty much onside. The military personnel were an opportunistic target.

I would say these groups are well aware of how infiltrated the IRA had become. The members of the RIRA and CIRA will be people that have know each other for a very long time.

I think the politicians here should do something they have refused to do until now, to actually shake each others hands. That simple gesture would be 2 fingers up to the RIRA and may go some way to convince them that we have come too far to go back to violence.

Couldnt agree more, n ireland has come on so far in the last decade or so, im old enough to remember some of the worst years of the troubles, and then this terrible incident occurs, as you rightly say, it's upto the politicians and communities to join together and alienate theese groups who want to drag things backwards.

Its all hell at the minute and more attacks will happen this week and I have a feeling that mainland UK will be a target at some point very soon.

On another point, I heard Gerry Adams today on the news telling the Police that they should 'behave' during their investigation. He is still having digs at the Police.
 
relax folks, pipe bombs are left outside stations all the time.

Interesting that one was left outside the sinn fein office.

If its still the RIRA it shows they have no control or at least trying to show they have no control

Its not all going mad or to hell, whats happening is that a small number of people are trying to trigger a responce from the other side. In the hope that things will snow ball, hopefully that responce stays in the same form as the first responce to the last attack. Thing to remember this is not like the 1970s, the only crowds on the streets are shoppers. Most people don't want any of this, they just want to get on with there lifes. That applys to the bulk of the old hardlines, Rangers vs Celtic matchs and a good drink is all they want.

Indeed. Things are different in this country now. Business is good and money is flowing. People dont want bombs going off and dead police on the streets

Cheets64, I think your over exaggerating here. I think that wouldn't serve much purpose. Orchish-Horde is right, RIRA wants a reaction and probably wouldn't get it.
