Audi S3

Iv never driven a BMW but if they handle and drive as good as people say they do, then the 330ci kind of messes all over the other cars on the list imo, it seems to have there performace whilst maintaining a high standard of luxury.

A very expensive to run toy.

A wrx with the SL pack and ppp isn't that expensive, my folks had one and in 30k or driving it cost them hardly anything.

SL pack adds leather interior and heated seat, and a sun roof, which is all pretty nice :)

But can see that's it's not the kinda thing he's after so would probably go with an S3/4 myself.

Leather sucks. 'cheap' (£5-600 second hand ain't cheap) STi seats are miles better than leather.

I like the S3, I can understand why you'd want it more than a Seat.

If you can afford it then why not go for it? :)

I can't at the moment, it is on the cards though, showed the wife some stuff about it last night and she likes the look of it. Will go and see one in the near future and start planning finances :)

I'v looked at a few different cars now and none seems to have the combination of understated style, performance and toys that the S3 has, I wish I could find something else but until I do the S3 is the only car on the list.

Did see Clarkson drive the Clio V6 on Top Gear repeats last night and was sorely tempted, not really practical for a 1 car family though :(

One of my friends at the office has an 02 Audi S3. He purchased it from new, and its a very capable car, and a very nice place to be when cruising.
I know he is looking to sell at some point as he wants the new S4. (I AM NOT advertising it!!!! I just know he wants the new S4.) I am sure he wanted more than 14k for his though, but considering its done stupidly low mileage, and got a few toys. (HAHA, and he purchased it brand new from the dealer!!! what a mug!)

Yeah he'll probably be able to get about £17k for it, the oldest 225s with 35-40k are about £15k.

Interestingly, I have just spoken to him about this thread, and although he is not in a rush, he is thinking about selling, and wants about £15k! Its done 32.6k miles
He had a few factory upgrades, like Bose 6disc head changer, 18" alloys, heated seats and silver door mirrors.

(although I would like to point out again, I am not advertising this car, its just a gauge price for info to the OP!)

£15-17k is what I am seeing on Autotrader at the moment, sounds about right, unfortunately even if you were advertising its not the right time for me at the moment :(

I'm hoping at that there will be a dip in prices for the current S3 model when the new version comes out later this year and hopefully people will be trading in decent ones to upgrade :)

I'd suggest you go and look at a couple of S3's in the flesh.
The interior will be the thing that does it, it's far better than any other VAG car and just isn't worth making the comparison with a scooby.

Many were specced very differently so you'll have to check what options were specced on it.

Many people have upgraded from the std 17" Avus II's to 18" wheels. Just check that they're not cheapo replica's. (I really can't understand someone putting a set of £200 rims on a +£20k car :( )

S4's are very nice but are totally different, the engine is rather cramped in the A4 bay and pre-2000/2001 cars are well known for turbo failure through oil starvation (the oil bakes in the supply pipes due to heat)

Also a 2.7 v6 biturbo is going to cost a hell of a lot more than the 1.8T

You'll see an average of about 28-30 in the S3. A mate who has an A6 2.7T (sam car, just mapped for slightly less power) sees an average of 21!!
The bills are quite high too, and nothings really gone wrong on it either)

Perforamance wise there's not that much in it and a remap does the S3 wonders (The S4 benefits well too, but it usually accelerates any decline, most people also end up changing the turbo's and try to improve cooling and oil supply)

How much quicker would the S4 be over a 1.8T? And then, how much faster would an RS6 be over the S4?

A friend of mine has a RS6 (lucky git) and I want to know just how far away his performance would be from the S3 or 1.8T A4 (remapped)

I think you'd be able to get a decent S3 for less than £15k.

I've got a 2001 and I would think it's worth about £11.5k with 47k on the clock.

Also, don't discount the 210. You won't be able to notice the difference between the 225 and the 210, and they revo to the same bhp anyway.
The 210 is also an insurance group lower.

I think you would also be surprised on the space inside the A/S3 as opposed to the A4 derivatives. Especially the older shape S4 2.7T that you are talking about.

Sit in both of them and you'll see what I mean. Also yes the 2.7T is a thirsty beasty.

I would go for the S3 hands down. The interior is fab, fantastic build quality, great drive, great looks, great sound and great performance.
