Australia turns into totalitarian police state.

And the government of South Australia, one of the country’s six states, developed and is now testing an app as Orwellian as any in the free world to enforce its quarantine rules. People in South Australia will be forced to download an app that combines facial recognition and geolocation. The state will text them at random times, and thereafter they will have 15 minutes to take a picture of their face in the location where they are supposed to be. Should they fail, the local police department will be sent to follow up in person. “We don’t tell them how often or when, on a random basis they have to reply within 15 minutes,” Premier Steven Marshall explained. “I think every South Australian should feel pretty proud that we are the national pilot for the home-based quarantine app.”

You’re in the shower, you’ve left your phone downstairs. Next thing you know, police are battering down your door down while you’re plucking a particularly long and annoying nose hair.

Or you're freaking asleep? How the heck are they going to deal with people who work nightshifts and have weird sleeping patterns...

Or just take naps during the day (anyone over 40 will understand this...)

What a draconian idea.

What if you don’t have reception and you’re away from a home address?

What if the iPhone app is no longer compatible with your iPhone, or your iPhone is no longer supported by Apple?

my favourite.. what if I’m still using a Nokia 3110? Please waste taxpayers cash..

this type of thing has been discussed before but mobiles have too many failure modes to be dependable.

Frothies are frothing
I guess you support the surveillance state. Nothing to hide, right? Would guess you're also A-OK with police entrapment, etc, given that these powers allow the police to spoof messages from people you know.

And of course no abuse of these powers would ever happen, no sir.

Truly, the hard left are every bit as authoritarian as the far right.

You seem unfamilair with Australian politics. Even the basics seem outwith your grasp.

Are you saying this is what Australian people want? What are you saying? It's like getting blood from a stone getting you to actually post anything other than complete nonsense, which is 99% of everything you post.

False accusation

Redneck is a pejorative term chiefly aimed at whites in the US and to a lesser extent elsewhere. The mental gymnastics required to say that its not just a bit racist like 'gammon' is quite impressive.

It's not even just my opinion.. here's an example of someone convicted in the UK for a racially aggravated offence for using the term.

A man who called police officers "white redneck hooligans" has been found guilty of making racist remarks.

Butt, defending himself, admitted he used the words Gestapo and hooligan, and possibly the word white, but denied calling the police rednecks.

Almost everyone's a bit of a bigot as we are almost all intolerant of or prejudiced against someone else's belief system.

Australia does seem to have lost the plot recently. But then we in the UK can't be to judgemental as we have the increasingly unhinged parliament in Holyrood passing some rather dubious laws of late.
