Australian Grand Prix 2014, Melbourne - Race 1/19

There is something quite cool about the sound of a energy recovery system spinning up during deceleration. The Audi LMP1 cars were the first to really have a distinctive sound, and now F1 has joined in.

Is there a way to get quali, the race and all the before/after stuff live without having to fork over £20 (two day passes) to now tv?

I don't have Sky Sports, haven't really been interested enough with Vettle winning everything, but as it's looking like that is about to change would like to watch this race live.

Edit: just to be clear, I'm happy to pay Sky, just not an extortionate amount.

I'm not sure how much can be read into cruising into the corners. Mercedes were trying that out at Barcelona a year ago - it's a relatively lossless way of saving fuel - I even do it in my 1.2 Corsa - fairly sure it makes **** all difference to my economy, but it probably loses me a second or so per corner getting home, so I can only imagine it would make a huge (relative) difference to the economy in an F1 car.

I can see it becoming common place for a few teams at some tracks under this phase of the regulations if there's no one else in the immediately vicinity.

Awesome, easily the best sounding car :D

That and the Williams. I quite like the different pitch in the Red Bull too. The Ferrari sounds shocking - very wheezy.

It was interesting seeing how much of a lift was required in the final corner. Previously they'd just neutralise the car through the corner, but currently they can't find the sweet spot accurately enough, so they've just got to lift off. That's why I hated the V8s - they had sod all torque, so feathering the throttle was far too easy for some of the best drivers in the world.

Sleep in tomorrow morning and watch a rerun of qualifying. Then you will get it all within a single 1 day pass.

When is the qualy re-run on Sky, not sure I want to get up at 6am?

(Will be using Sky Go so can't record it.)

[E] 9am

Well, I've finally managed to put FP1 on and so far, I'm liking the new-look F1. The engines are a bit on the quiet side, but in terms of the sound itself I definitely prefer the V6s to the V8s. I especially like that the three different power units all have distinct sounds, whereas the V8s were very close to one another. The onboard from Button earlier on showed that his was only running around the 12K mark, so I suppose we'll get a bit of a boos when they crank them up for qualifying and the race. :)

It's certainly nice to see the cars squirming a lot more, with drivers having to fight the cars. It should certainly make things quite exciting, although I won't envy them when they have to deal with a wet race. :p

F1 channel ready to go :)

Looking forward to this one.

Sounds like Mercedes are way ahead. Let's hope Hamilton and Rosberg can capitalise on it.

As for RB, they are clearly fast, but it doesn't matter how good their aero is if it means they can't finish a race. It isn't all about speed.

These guys are paid millions of dollars per year.
Make them work for their money ;)

Also, if there are cars are less stable, good drivers will be able to differentiate themselves from the lesser drivers.

Just been playing with the official F1 app and reviewing FP2…

Hamilton, Rosberg and Alonso all set their quickest times on medium tyres while Vettel was on softs. So while 4th fastest initally ounds good for RBR, it's not quite as impressive when you take into account the difference in tyres.
