Australian Grand Prix 2015, Melbourne - Race 1/19

Firstly, you're wrong about what I claimed and why, second, Ron did NOT do a good job explaining it... that was a shockingly awful interview.

My point, that you ignored is that they keep saying the engine is reliable, there are only minor niggling problems. They've said there are NO cooling issues, it's reliable... but all of a sudden they all three don't want to turn up the engine because they'll just blow them up?

They are contradicting themselves. Ron's explanation for not burning up engines was it's too early to burn through engines... again the consequence of taking a new engine is starting from the back. If they are going to start from the back anyway where is the downside?

Again link this back to what the Honda guy is saying, that they didn't want to risk losing an engine by running hotter but he added that it's because they have no experience of running hotter. Again this is contradictory... by that logic you would never turn up the engine because you don't have experience running it hotter.... which you can't get without turning the engine up.

They make claims of it's reliability and saying there are no real problems with it... yet they have never even run it full power so actually even claiming it's reliable is ridiculous. They haven't run it hot enough to test and know it's reliable, but if it was reliable.... why can't they turn the engine up.

Every single word out of all three of their mouths is completely contradictory and illogical. This was what my post was about, regardless of what you wanted it to be. Their reasoning for not turning the engine up is retarded. If they had a genuinely good reason for not turning it up, like, they actually can't or it is turned up and it's slow without any mgu-k/h power at all because those parts just don't work currently... well, again that was my point. I suspect the engine has a major problem and isn't just "not turned up all the way".

Have they categorically stated the engine is reliable? Have you got a link to this? The way I see it is they know for a fact that the engine will be under extra stress if they turn the power up. It's possible to extract data from the car and improve it step by step with the engine running consistently longer runs on reduced power than by simply battering it with 100% power and gathering data in infinitesimally small amounts. They need lots of consisentent smooth data to develop the engine with, they don't need to burn engines up and lose development paths.

You can obviously gain data by bolstering the power in incremental steps, addressing reliability problems and adding performance in relative steps. This is what McLaren-Honda are doing.

All of the problems from testing point towards niggly problems, there isn't, from anything I've read, anything to suggest that the engine has a "major" problem, but these are hugely complex machines with a million and one parts implemented into them... running hotter could cause a severe blow out of several parts and an engine itself which won't aid in the car's development trajectory correctly.

What ever way you want to dress it up smr, that car is a dud root cobber.

That sounds like something an old man would say. Anyway, I'm not talking about the car in it's current state, obviously qualifying on the back row of the grid is awful. The car at present is awful, but I'm interested in it's future potential.

They are five seconds off the pace of Mercedes, now correct me if I am wrong but no team has ever come close to making up 3 seconds never mind 5.

have to wonder if the mclaren fans are desperate or really think this team will be anywhere come late season!

i am surprised it has gone this wrong, but then mclaren didnt really do well with the merc engine last year. the car chassis and engine could be terrible

id be very very surprised if this package finishes above all the renault, ferrari, merc based cars this season in even one race.

what would i do if i was Mc/Honda? use one car for speed and one car for miles?
if they go all out and wreck engines id be more concerned as if its useful data vs miles. I wouldnt in any way be thinking 'we might come good later, lets save em'
can they afford to treat 2015 as a testing year effectively?
Honda will know if they have made a dud im sure.

different topic

if nico/hamilton cant race each other this year (ie hamilton steaming off into the distance) i wonder what it will do for f1 in terms of audience?
i watch now for the racing and support of my team but for those who like to watch the front (ie many americans!) this could be a very dmaging year for the sport

I can think what I like :)

Latest on Bottas:

"During yesterday’s qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas developed a back injury which the team felt necessary to be examined by the FIA Medical Delegate at the circuit.

Following this, he was transferred to Albert Hospital in Melbourne for further precautionary scans which revealed that Valtteri had sustained some soft tissue damage in his lower back.

He remained in hospital overnight and following a restful night is now working with a physiotherapist prior to final assessment by the FIA in the early afternoon to determine whether he will be able to race later today. The team will release a further update as information is available."

Poor Alonso :(. Should have stayed with Ferrari.

I don't think finishing 3rd or 4th interests him much :) All he's bothered about is winning another WDC... he's stated before that he wants to match his idol Ayrton Senna ... so he probably couldn't care less about Ferrari, if they were able to compete for the Championship.... that would be a different story. But then again Ferrari certainly won't do it this year. Next year who knows... but he's gambled on McLaren being stronger next year, and he may be right...

Absolutely no one remembers drivers for finishing 3rd or 4th in a Championship.

Bottas declared unfit to race.
17 cars will start the race. Everyone behind him on the grid moves up a place

Apparently he failed the FIA cockpit escape test. Can't pass that, can't race.

BOTTAS DECLARED UNFIT TO RACE IN AUSTRALIAN GP

15 MAR 2015
Following the team’s earlier statement regarding the injury that Valtteri sustained to his lower back during yesterday’s qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix, it can be confirmed that the scans revealed Valtteri suffered a very small tear in the annular part of a disc in his lower back.

Valtteri has since been evaluated by the FIA’s medical team and following a series of tests the FIA Medical Delegate has deemed Valtteri unfit to take part in this afternoon’s race. The team respect the FIA’s decision and will now work with Valtteri ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix to ensure he receives the treatment required to get him back to full fitness.
