Australian Grand Prix 2016, Melbourne - Race 1/21

what an absolute farce the new qually system is... boring, slow, quiet, watching a clock count down from 90 seconds, lol..

it even looked like the teams were inadvertently taking the **** when the cars were in the garage and retired with the clock still going down rofl.

Not single pundit, commentator or driver has so far said this system is an improvement.

Exactly, Graham Lowden almost ******* himself laughing at it on the midweek report,

Hamilton hasn't said it's better
Rosberg hasn't Bottas hasn't....the entire grid hasn't...

Maldonado is probably at home swearing at the TV right now.

Not one commentator, pundit, driver, team principle has said it's good, even the clown hobbit Bernie has said "it's probably crap" after the qualifying today.

edit - now I see he's vowed to scrap it. (what a mockery of the Sport this is ! :D)

Yet all the drivers loved the old system, all the team principles, all the fans, even my pet cat did.

Absolute joke. I don't want to sit there watching a stupid little square box with 90 seconds in it count down, I want to see awesome laps being banged in like the old system provided us with.

*slow claps at the FIA*

Just switched the TV off with 3 minutes left on the clock in Q3 for the first time ever. What a complete farce the new system is. What annoys me is that this was voted for by a number of people (including the teams), who have proven, once again, that they are utterly clueless. Nothing wrong with the old system at all, it's just busy work with F1 as usual.

On a separate note, C4's coverage seemed ok, the pundits and commentary staff working well. Steve Jones' tone seemed perhaps slightly disinterested at times when announcing sessions, but he came across well enough the rest of the time including in the discussions - will see how he develops through the season.

Didn't bother watching it
Probably won't bother tomorrow either.
Just a shame
First time I haven't watched an opener since Hill was in the Williams Renault.

I'd rather see a 45-60mins sprint race using hard tyres only on Saturdays, based on a reverse grid of the previous full GP race, than the farce we had this morning. The positions of which decide the GP race grid for Sunday.

Having said that, I don't think think it would be that hard in theory to make the new format work, with some common sense tweaks that make cars stay out until the end of each qualifying session unless they are eliminated.

What is qualifying and how to make it a spectacle?

Let's face it, no non hardcore fan is going to watch an hour qualifying for a one hour 30 minute race, it makes no sense.

For myself, I am a purist. But how about 30 minute session, 12 laps max? No gimmicks no stupid rules, just set the fastest time.

People are not stupid they don't need to see a shoot out, they know whenever gets the fastest time will be first. You don't need to time stagger the session or eliminate cars, that's just superflous nonsense.

Rewatching on Channel 4. Q3 was effectively over with 9 minutes of the 14 left to run, and completely over with over 4 minutes left to run.

Yeh but that was because Ferrari decided not to run.

They would have made the same decision in old qualifying as well.

It just requires some small changes. Minimum fuel quantity so you don't waste time refuelling and allowing people to finish a lap once started.

Is Hamilton actually short sighted and wears contacts in the car or is he just trying to be fashionable?

I disagree, I know loads of casual F1 fans who happily watched the 3 session format that wouldn't have bothered to watch the pre 2006 1 hour long session.

It also great fun track side as you get 3 short 15 minute bursts of action.

There isn't enough tyres for it, and changing them takes too long.

And the tyre allocations for the next 6 races have already been set, plus the 13 sets per weekend rule is baked into the regulations and Pirelli's contract anyway.

Yeah because an hour is a long time, no points awarded just for grid position - which should become less important with aerodynamic changes;)

Make it 30 minutes format. Set the fastest time and get your grid position. Simples.

Definitely is, works trackside and on TV beautifully, hard to think of a way that it can be bettered actually.

Came up on Sky and they claim it is a fashion accessory, rather than hime secretly wearing contact lenses for years!

You and I watch a different Formula 1 on TV.

Tyres will always run out, that was happening with the old style qualifying anyway causing people to only do one lap in Q3 (and none before the extra set was introduced). It isn't a new problem.

Why would people bother turning up on a Saturday for that? Its basically just taking the times from the last Practice session.

The 3 session format worked. All it needed was more tyres and to be decoupled from the race and it would have been spot on.
