Pretty certain he could have been 1 maybe 1.5 seconds closer and loose nothing of significance.

If you've worked in F1 you must know there are no margins. "Nothing of significance" could equate to several grid positions, which is why cars are still normally 4-5 seconds apart during qualifying and keeping 2-3 second gaps even in races.

Certainly I expect slipstreams to mean the opposite at some tracks (getting as close as reasonably possible, and maybe 2 seconds apart) but that's not what you'd want at the high downforce Albert Park.

Maybe George's mesaages were because he wanted to go a bit faster, get more heat, for his one flyer, when Lewis was taking it a bit more steady knowing he was fuelled for two?
Did you watch qualifying? It was the team who informed Russell that time was close, they were going to ask Hamilton to go quicker and Russell confirmed that Hamilton should be asked to go quicker. It wasn't about tyres, they were literally going to run out of time if Hamilton didn't pick up the pace (and they did).

He had a hydraulics issue which meant he couldn't change gear. Hardly his fault, is it?
Alonso's lap was looking amazing too - quicker than LEC up to the point his gears failed.

Yep , was well on it for sure and that sector 2 time was amazing.

Just been watching the slow mo back of the final qualifying lap on Max vs Charles and I’m sue Max lifted before turn 16 and cost him pole - going by that Max might just be quicker over the race.

Ferrari porpoising is unreal.

The race is RB’s to lose. Sainz is out of position and will drop in to traffic in the first stint. RB can also use Perez to compromise Ferrari’s race strategy (I.e they could keep Perez in Leclerc’s pit window and run him long).

Was Hamilton being a bit naughty in not speeding up enough to stop Russell from getting to the line in time for their second attempt? Obviously they left the pits in time, then were told to speed up, but Russell didn't make it in time for the second quick lap, then Hamilton pipped him for fifth. Shades of Hungary 2007 there.

When did this happen? In Q3 russell finished his final run just before Hamilton

Unlucky Alonso - would be great to see him in the mix at the front - looks much closer in the field behind Ferrari and RB this weekend though - McLaren, Alpine and Mercedes look like they could be in for a good battle tomorrow.

3 place drop for Stroll, for all the difference. Albon summoned for not providing a sample. No word on Perez yet. Max blocking Lewis doesn't seem to be getting investigated.

Neither of them missed anything, Russell was just slower.

They both had as many qualifying laps as they needed, and wanted.

Neither ran out of time anywhere.

Perez didn’t seem happy with they tyre strategy options for the race in his post-quali interview. I do agree with you regarding RB using Perez to mess Ferrari about.

I've watched the highlights and yes, Russell must have passed Hamilton during the cool down/warm up lap before their second attempt at the end so did get his lap in. I guess Hamilton was going too slow for Russell's liking, so rather than Hamilton speeding up it looks like Russell just passed Hamilton instead.

My apologies. :)

Albon disqualified for no fuel sample. Leclerc and Tsunoda summoned for driving slowly on their inhlaps.

Wow at Mclaren. Wonder what they have done to go from the back to p4. Gives hope to Mercedes though I guess if they can do something similar.

Crazy how much faster the Ferrari and Red Bull were in sector 3 compared to the Merc. Lewis and Russell were only a few tenths off after sector 2 but then always seemed to lose about half a second in the final sector.

No penalty for Sergio. Puts the RBs in a very strong position tomorrow.

Yuki gets his third (!) reprimand of the season for driving slowly on an inlap. The others are cleared.

Think I might get up early for this... (Who am I kidding, I have a 3 year and 7 month old, of course I'll be up!)

I'd love to see some retirements and Danny Ric get on the podium here.

So it’s ok to keep your foot in under yellows. Got it.

I wonder what the cause of that is? I thought Hamilton had to slow a lot more for Turn 15 than some other drivers but it’s a similar corner to T3 and, as you say, they aren’t that slow in S1 so there must be more to it than that.
