Pretty certain he could have been 1 maybe 1.5 seconds closer and loose nothing of significance.
If you've worked in F1 you must know there are no margins. "Nothing of significance" could equate to several grid positions, which is why cars are still normally 4-5 seconds apart during qualifying and keeping 2-3 second gaps even in races.
Certainly I expect slipstreams to mean the opposite at some tracks (getting as close as reasonably possible, and maybe 2 seconds apart) but that's not what you'd want at the high downforce Albert Park.
Did you watch qualifying? It was the team who informed Russell that time was close, they were going to ask Hamilton to go quicker and Russell confirmed that Hamilton should be asked to go quicker. It wasn't about tyres, they were literally going to run out of time if Hamilton didn't pick up the pace (and they did).Maybe George's mesaages were because he wanted to go a bit faster, get more heat, for his one flyer, when Lewis was taking it a bit more steady knowing he was fuelled for two?
