avatar - 1000points in 5 minutes

I think it is really sad that they do it. Paying what like £3-5 for a rental just for achievements. I couldn't care less about achievements (dont want to start a flame war, just telling people who rent Avatar off! ;)).

I completely agreed with Simon about the points, im glad COD4 doesn't have them because its about gameplay, not points.

I do like achievements for singleplayer because it adds replayability, but people who just buy/rent games for the points have no life.

Avatar is the exception though tbh. The problem (if you can call it that) is that MS mandate that 1000 points are included with every retail title. So devs may reluctantly put in stuff that they don't really care about or doesn't add to the game. Conversely other developers will implement it better.

Personally If I had to pick I would say achievements work great in sandbox games (as a lot of those are exploration/collectible based anyway by design), And maybe beat-em ups and FPS games in terms of online achievements (number of wins, headshots etc)

In hindsight it is a masterstroke by MS as there clearly is a huge market of people who will buy rent games just to increase their score by up to 1000 points. I can see a similar system existing in the next gen of consoles, although personally I am not a fan of achievements they have proven successful so they ain't going anywhere fast, and we will see more titles with easy points to get quick sales.

They don't pay £3-£5 if they're on a rental service where they just pay a flat monthly fee and just add it to their queue. I don't see why you're getting so worked up about it.

Im not getting worked up about it. I think its just stupid that people will pay extra money for more points. They are just trying to make their e-penis bigger and being gamerscore *****'s.

if they wanna cheat, let em cheat..

but at end of day its their gt thats wrecked :p

Who here actually rented Avatar for the 1000 points ? Pretty damn sad whoever did really.

Not really. I was on a rental service at the time and just added it to my queue. It turned up one day, I played it for 2 minutes, and sent it back.

It's not as if I paid extra to actually rent it.

I don't understand why people care so much. If people enjoy getting gamerpoints, let them get on with it.

But you still paid for it. Even if its a rental service, everything you rent is still being paid for.

I dont care about people who play games just for the points. Its just stupid that people pay for Avatar just for the points to make them seem better.

The same principle is for WoW Gold. Your paying extra money for something that isn't real, granted that it helps you progress, but your still paying a monthly fee.

I just dont really understand the point in it is all.

I paid for the service as a whole. I paid nothing extra for renting this game over something else.

Well no, you don't know why they do it. Some people might think it makes them look better having a bigger gamescore. I personally like the sense of achievement (couldn't think of another word) when unlocking achievements. (obviously that doesn't cover my reasons for renting Avatar :p)

I'm a very casual gamer, hence my current score of 980 as I'm not really interested in achievements....however if they gave it a direct connection to something of value in the next gen then I certainly would be....i.e 5000 gamer points = 500 MS points or similar. Surely this would be worth it for Microsoft as it would increase loyalty in the same sense that I now do pretty much all of my shopping in tesco simply cause of the clubcard. Thoughts?

Yep this is a good method that i think they should use. Would mean that there is some purpose to achievements other than added replayability.

I don't understand why people have such a problem with gamerscore. Take me for instance, I love gamerscore. It gives me something to compete against others with. The OcUK GT database has a leaderboard and trying to climb up it gives me enjoyment. When im playing games I earn gamerscore that helps me go up he leaderboard. I can then get further enjoyment when I see my place in the leaderboard increase.

If it wasnt for achievement points, I wouldn't have done some of the tricks in Crackdown, played through Condemned without using guns or tried outlandish 40yd efforts in Pro Evo 2008. Also im currently playing Bully, and without achievements I wouldnt see the point in collecting rubber bands/giving students wedgies but because I get something (20 points) from it, I might as well play the game to the fullest.

I dont think that because I have a fairly large gamerscore it means Im a better gamer, but it does mean that I've gained more enjoyment from my games in most cases.
