When was the track built?

It wasn’t – Baku is the newest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, joining the ranks of Monaco, Melbourne and Singapore.

When was its first Grand Prix?

The first Grand Prix in Baku was held in 2016, as the European Grand Prix. That was followed by the inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017, which witnessed one of the biggest upsets of the season, with Daniel Ricciardo winning out from Valtteri Bottas and the Williams of Lance Stroll, while Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel engaged in some argy-bargy behind the Safety Car.

What’s the circuit like?

A mixture of wide and open and tight and twisty. The lonnnnng main straight along the Baku shoreline is a slipstreaming mecca, and with cars able to run three abreast into Turn 1, the action often looks more IndyCar than F1. However from there, the track loops around into the city’s narrow, winding Icheri Sheher old town, dramatically wending past Baku’s medieval city walls. As in Monaco, slightest mistakes are punished quickly and severely, while set-up wise, the teams are forced to choose between downforce for the twisty bits and less drag for the straight.

Hoping for a decent race, Baku so far has never really disappointed, fully expect a Red Bull / Ferrari battle here (if Ferrari manage not to screw themselves)

Where Lewis threw away a massive opportunity last year after Max's tyre failure, forgetting to turn off his "magic" tyre warming button for the restart.

Will the aero benefits of those tiny sidepods come up trumps on that long straight? I suspect not, but live in hope, to make it more of a three way fight this weekend.

Always look forwards to Baku. Ferrari/Leclerc need to put it together this weekend more than ever. The balance between Max and Checo is also going to be interesting to watch. Another strong result for Sergio would surely start ramping tensions up.

I'm hoping this turns out to be true. Max is all buddy buddy with Perez while he's ahead, but as soon as he's fighting with Perez for actual wins, maybe it'll change. I remember the Rosberg/Hamilton rivalry was always good to watch.

He didn't forget to turn it off, the button was badly designed and it got unintentionally knocked back on after the restart.

Jos has already come out in the media saying that RB threw away 10 points for Max. I expect he'll have a nuclear meltdown if Perez begins to lead the WDC :D.

Red bull have had the advantage on tracks with long straight s this season, Ferraris car seems to be a bit more draggy due to their side pod design
On the flipside of that, Ferrari have a sizable advantage in slow corners which is 3/4 of the lap at Baku. It'll be interesting to see which generates the most laptime. I'd expect Ferrari to get pole with the better pace overall, but RB to win the race as they can simply overtake on the straight and park the bus in the 90 left/90 right parts.

Here's hoping :D

Thanks for the thread @chrismscotland

Would be juicy if Max lost the title by <10 points. :D

Even funnier if he loses it to Perez. :D

By my reckoning, Perez would only be one point behind Verstappen and second in the championship had they not swapped position in Barcelona (albeit Verstappen having retired from second in Melbourne). Verstappen would have been on 118, Perez on 117 and Leclerc on 116. He's been excellent this season, much, much closer and genuinely the faster driver at least twice (at Monaco and Saudi, until Latifi did what Latifi does best just after Perez had pitted).

He usually goes well around here too. I seem to recall he had a shot at winning on strategy last season (before the red flag), but my memory of that is somewhat blurry as so much happened after the first stint. He usually went very well in the Racing Point too. Indeed, looking it up his record is excellent around here.

2016: 3rd
2017: retired (clash with Ocon, but was running third at the time, potentially with a shot at winning given Hamilton's headrest coming loose and Vettel's penalty, though he'd have struggled to hold off Ricciardo coming through the pack).
2018: 3rd
2019: 6th
2020: race not held
2021: 1st

Not bad for a Racing Point and one race in a Red Bull.

I would love for Perez to win WDC. It's doable given that the Ferraris are in the mix for race wins. Perez just needs to ensure that when he's ahead of Max there is a Ferrari in-between them to stop RB switching them around, and also be bold on strategy.

Always liked Baku, it gives some interesting races. The layout looks pretty much how it would be if there was a race in Alicante. Massive long straight, followed by a tight corner, short straight, another tight corner onto a huge straight (which in Alicante would gain some elevation), then a slower section around the castle before the long straight again.
