What's making the Merc's so much quicker?
I wouldn't remove driver as a large factor in this. I think one of the things Merc has got down is brake by wire. They've looked rock solid on it since early testing. They still lock up and have issues but I think beyond the engine being good they've got their harvesting set up exceptionally well.
I think they mentioned in the notebook that basically Chilton wasn't even playing with settings in the first half of the race and in the second he started adjusting brake bias and stuff and got way more performance.
I think Hamilton and Rosberg are very technical guys who are potentially making dozens of changes per lap, corner to corner, for the optimum everything. I think it's a combination of things, drivers, drivers suited to heavy technical input throughout the race, raw speed of both drivers.
Williams tyre deg is terrible and I think genuinely that Force India have just always built a car around doing less stops and limping to the end, I don't think they have the experience or tactical awareness to go balls out start to finish. They've been too timid for too long and now have an engine that will likely favour more stops and just being faster. I think Force India will close the gap if they run repeated races at faster pace as the drivers get more use to driving faster but still saving a bit of fuel. I think the biggest step forward from them today came from the jump from a "slow and steady" strategy to a "lets burn some damn rubber" strategy.
everything on that merc is working so well though, tire wear, fuel consumption, efficiency, driver style, synergy. Save a bit more fuel, harvest a bit more kers, save even more fuel while using more kers.
This is why I'm looking forward to McLaren next year. As I feel they're doing the same, hence Honda returning late, taking Magnuson over Pérez, get him settled and experienced, Ron back.
I was never expecting McLaren to do that well this year, but wasn't expecting them this poor, especially as the merc engine is so good.
I really don't expect though, outside of Honda knocking one out of the park, to be that good too soon. Merc started big changes and bringing in the right people at least 2.5 years ago, and were still making changes and bringing in people to the start of last season who would all have effected how the 2014 car was developed in the past 2 years. Ron only really just made changes. I think this is an evaluation season for them. Get some people in, see who is good enough who isn't, get rid of some people and target people from other teams or outside the sport to come in and do a job. I can't see it not taking a couple years to rebuild a team and I can't see magical huge changes in competitiveness till the year after that is done. Improvements, sure, but I think we're talking about a 2-3 year project, like Merc, minimum.
