Mercedes going to have a tough time clawing that pace back unless they have better race pace, especially having to work on next years car. Quite impressive to have lost that much time, especially given how long Mercedes have been working on this years car. I'm looking forward to seeing how good Max really is when he actually has something to lose and a championship is on the line.

I guess Mercedes struggled with the aero changes this year? Or the Honda is better/turned up. Don't they set their engine power at the beginning of a race weekend now and then have to stick with it? Rather than having party modes?

Question is, can they find some magic somewhere to recover the lost performance?

They seem better this weekend than at testing, but is that the problem ‘fixed’ and this is the best they’ve got, or is there more potential that they can eek out?

Already watched quali today but just turned channel 4 for the highlights and didn't know that Ben Edwards had stepped down. Alex Jacques is the new commentator. Sounds ok but a bit like a 1970s radio one DJ.

Of course they'll recover, and they always develop the car better and faster throughout a season than anyone else.

We don't even know what they've set the car up for but they are always good on the long runs, still, if RB have really made a huge step forward then it'll be great for the racing.

Bottas will be nowhere this year if Merc really do struggle.

I fully expect Bottas to only stay at Mercedes if Hamilton retires, otherwise Russell will take his place.

I hate the CH4 coverage, but until F1 gets exciting I'm not paying for the Sky coverage again.

It's almost as if after 1 qualifying session they have 90% given the championship to Redbull lol, way too excited.

Lewis didn't hook up S2 on his fastest lap and dropped about 0.3 seconds, Merc are not as far back as people would like to think imo.

You don't win a championship on 1 lap pace, who knows what race pace will look like?

I'm not getting my hopes up for a fight too the end just yet.

Am I remembering correctly, is this Honda’s final season? Such a shame to come good and then pull out...
Yes this will be their final season this time. Like a bad penny they'll be back again in a few years time. Red Bull negotiated a power unit freeze with the FIA until 2025 and are taking over the engine maintenance and supply for them and AT.

@ZG002 I agree, I didn't mind C4 coverage, it will be painful to watch given Webber and Coulthard bias to RB as they are 'employees', the over hype will be unbearable.

I think I will be listening via BBC Sport at this rate.
