@ZG002 I agree, I didn't mind C4 coverage, it will be painful to watch given Webber and Coulthard bias to RB as they are 'employees', the over hype will be unbearable.

I think I will be listening via BBC Sport at this rate.
Why not have Christian Horner do everything? Mr amorphous 'say the right thing' Horner is surely the voice of F1 in its current state? Even Brundle makes him look like a sponsors cardboard cut-out.

Interesting session

Ocon - poop. Should have ditched him last over the winter. (said that last year)
If verstappen keeps this up against perez, will really have to start believing he's just that good!

There’s no doubt that Verstappen is that good but the Q2/Q3 difference makes it look worse than it is. Perez was only 0.3 behind Verstappen in Q2 which had he got through that difference would put Perez 2nd on the grid.

For his first race in a new car then that is arguably better than Albon and Gasly especially as you would expect Perez to get faster as he gets more comfortable in the car.

Apparently this is the first season opener since the hybrid era that Mercedes haven't got pole!
Red Bull negotiated a power unit freeze with the FIA until 2025 and are taking over the engine maintenance and supply for them and AT.
Looking like a great move on their part.

It was a good move, but their reasons I believe for doing so were from a cost perspective to enable them to keep the current (this years spec) engines until 2025, however, they also knew that Honda had totally redesigned and made big gains meaning they may have even eclipsed Merc, and if so, they get possibly the best package on the grid sealed in until 2025

Not so much a deal but rather a hustle, but it does make things very interesting.

Harsh to judge him on the basis of one quali session where his hot lap got ruined by yellow flags, but if he doesn't impress he'll surely be out. Alpine have too many good academy drivers.

RB screwed up by sending Pérez out on mediums again after he messed up his first lap. He wasn't that far off Max's pace, much closer than Albon was last year.

F1 always used to be about the best pushing each other. Now it is just who can get the best rules for them.

There was no doubt Merc hit gold with the hybrid rule changes but it took other teams years to catch up whereas in the old days you would have had a new engine design by the time Europe came around.

Potentially we could have the same with RB.

The deciding factor for the next few seasons will be which manufacturer has adjusted better to the budget cap. Red Bull have already indicated they've had a massive culling of their staff from Milton Keynes.

In theory teams like Aston Martin and Mclaren will adjust better as they've become more familiar with running lean budgets. But time will tell.

Think its fair to judge Ocon. He's been on f1 a while now, he wasn't great last yea . There are better choices .

But yeah, perez is different, I really hope he reigns verstappen in a bit

Be interesting to see how Perez does today, he's in his classic position to do a comeback drive 11th place with a free tyre choice. This time he's got decent machinery under him as well, think top 4 should still be his aim.

Prediction: if the race proceeds without any accidents Verstappen and Hamilton will take the top two places and Perez will be third.

Mercedes should have replaced Bottas with Russell.
