ballistix dying

Just dealt with their customer service, absolutely fantastic service, I will persist with their memory simply because of this.

Good service = constant custom!

you will get bored after the 4th attempt per year..... and they will also start to blame you for there shoddy products.

yes, there customer service is top notch, but ive not had ONE dimm last more than 7 months, and ive had 10.... yes 10!!!! most only last 3-4months.

Oh dear, sounds like you had a rough time!

I been using Crucial memory for years and years and years! (hasn't everyone?) and to be honest I never had a problem with a Crucial product, except one which was my 18month old set of Ballistix PC3200.

I don't think I am lucky, I just think you have been *real* unlucky or have something weird happening inside your system?

My first set of OCZ was faulty, it happens, I just can't see how someone can have several bad batches one after another?

easy i had 2 sets each lasting less than a week and now im using my G.Skill ram that ive had nearly a year and not had one problem with them so only thing that can be at fault is the ram

ive been using there "normal" (they call it value these days) ram for years... my first PC upgrade in 1998 was crucail ram PC133 cas3, that ram still works TODAY. My first home built PC in 1999 run with PC133 cas2, which also works today.

Overall ive probably had or built systems with about 4-6gig of SDR ram and 1-2gig of "normal" DDR... Only one issue was a incompatablitly with a PC133 256mb module which required a RMA...

However ive had 5gig of there HIGH end ballistix DDR ram, and all of it BUT 1x512mb failed so far.

Ok I see,

to save me trawling through the whole thread can you list the settings and hardware that you are using with this Ballistix pls. . .

And did you say that the new sticks you are getting are faulty straight away?

Maybe Crucial ran out of brand new 1GB modules months ago due to all the returns and have since been re-circulating the faulty RAM that has been sent back already? :p :p

That's my conspiracy theory and i'm sticking with it!

Well, got my OCZ replacements from Overclockers and delighted - never had my Ballistix at 1T but with these Gold OCZ booted up with 260x10 on 1T and everything hunky dorry.

Would like to take this chance to thank Overclockers and especially Andy for being so great.

512mb PC3200:

default settings on all. Normaly my overclocking experiences was short, ie a week or 2 id test them at different settings but id always end up at 200mhz on the 512mb chips.

Ive had 6 512mb chips overall

2 double sided. One died after 7months, and the other one never died, however it was incompatible with the single-sided replacement so was also sent back. the 4 single sided chips never lasted more than 4 months.

1gig PC4000:

my first set of PC4000 i ran at 240mhz 3-4-4-8 2t (was never 1t stable) at 2.8volts for 2 months before they died.

my second set of PC4000 ive run at 250mhz 3-4-4-8 1t for 2 months, using 2.65volts (from hardocp and ocuk thread i decided this was the best action to try and keep these alive).

However 1 month ago this became unstable, so i set to 2t and 2.7volts. Ive now had to back them down to 200mhz 3-3-3-8 2t and 2.8volts to get them to work, and as i say they are hotter than my CPU....and they BOTH have active cooling.

note:
Single-sided 512mb chips are the same as double-sided 1gig chips hence the fail rate. Double sided 512mb chips uses older, lower density chips and are a lot cooler and more reliable.

hardware:

2 double sided Pc3200 512mb chips and 2 single sided Pc3200 512mb used on an Asus A8V deluxe (VIA)

2 single sided PC3200 512mb chips and the 4 double sided PC4000 1gigs used on my Asus A8N-SLI-Premium.

I upgraded to the A8N because i started to doubt if the A8V was killing the ram, but this turned out not to be true, but it gave me a reason to get a X2 4400 and a 7800gtx ;)

My 2x1GB Ballistix PC4000 sticks have now definitely had it!

Running at the designated settings of 250mhz with 3,4,4,8 timings I can just manage to boot into Windows before the PC restarts. This happens everytime regardless of voltage changes.

I shall be ringning Crucial's support line next week for replacements.

So glad i returned mine when i did - the OCZ's i have got in replacement have been a joy compared to the constant pain that the Ballistix were.

I just got a windows explorer error out of nowhere.

I've already sent 1x1GB DDR500 Ballistix Tracer stick to be RMA'd last week, does this mean the other is on its way out now!?!

most likely

Mine have just died again  This will be the 5th set returned in the last year 3 x 1GB kit failed, already returned a 2GB kit just before xmas & now these replacements have failed again, always after around 6-8 weeks of use.

I originally bought these from OcUK,but do you guys think i can insist on a refund now ? I am going to try at least, getting sick of returning these all the time,as good as the rma service is,i'm using it too much

Surely they can't just keep giving out replacements that keep failing, that's not good customer service in my book !!

Should i see if OcUK will replace them for something else,or will that not be the case ,since i've already RMA'D them with crucial

Cheers

Rob

I have had my Ballistix for over a year and had to return them twice, do you think overclockers will swap them for something else...I'm fed up paying £4 PP to get another faulty set.
