Bangernomics

interesting how not many like or enjoy watching fifth gear.. yet it has done so many useful tests that top gear has never even attempted..

Almost everyone is missing the point, which was a question about which car is safer.

NOT that people WANT to buy a new renault because it has NCAP 5*.

NOT that people buy a car because of its safety features.

It's purely and simply about what is safer to be in if you had an accident, a 10+ year old golf or a new clio. That's it. Any other arguments or discussions, about how likely you are to have an accident are just not relevant.

Again, it helps if you can follow a discussion from the beginning, rather than jumping in half way through.

:)

My 306 d turbo (work car) cost me £50 three years ago.

Replaced the head gasket (£100) plus a radiator (£75) and apart from two oil changes and the usual MOT's (which I don't pay for) ;) it's cost me nothing other than that to run. Even on the same tyres!

Great little cars these 306 diesels.

You'd be safer in a scorpian tank or an apc. Better yet, buy a Bowler wildcat - surely that is the safest method of running the kids to school? Or add a structural FIA standard roll cage to an S class Merc or a 7 series and now you're cooking on gas.

The point is yes, in the insanely unlikely event I was going to be in a potentially fatal accident, I would choose to be in a 5* clio over a mk2 golf. But as an everyday experience I would rather drive something that cost 10-15% of the Clio list price and was better on everything bar the NCAP.

People do buy on an NCAP rarting though and spend obscene money (which they very often do not have) on a spectacularly poor car with a dreadully under-powered engine and gash interior because it's 35 quid a year to tax and 5* NCAP.

He didn't mention a Scorpion Tank nor did he mention an APC. But if he had said that a 15 year old Gold was better in a crash than an APC/Tank I'd have commented in exactly the same way.

Hurrah, we've got there!

Yes, I quite agree. I don't really see how it's relevant to the original question.
