Bank Issue

Back in February I strolled into my local Barclays, sat down with one of them financial assistants and requested that they cancel my overdraft.

I remember her giving me this confused look and questioning whether I really wanted to do that. She began advising that I simply reduce the overdraft..... I wasnt interested.

Anyway 15mins had gone and I had just about enough of her sales tactics. And told her to simply cancel the plan..... Job Done...

Today I check my account and notice that a small amount of monies had beed deducted from my account. The ref read "Payment Protection".

I had no idea what this "Payment Protection" was for. I mean it couldnt have been for the overdraft as I told Barclays to cancel it.

So I stroll over to my local bank to contact customer services over the phone. To my shock, the overdraft is still active  . Despite the customer services person being able to acknowledging the very fact that I made the request.

Not sure how I'm going to handle this yet..

When dealing with your bank, it is best to put all correspondence in writing, so that you can prove what has been instructed in the past.

Find out what the Payment Protection is for, then advise here and I'm sure someone will help you.

MoneySavingExpert.com forums are also good for advice.

Barclays:

When I moved, naturally, I changed my address with them. That was nearly SEVEN YEARS AGO and after FIVE TIMES of going in to the bank that's never open when I want it to be, they're still getting it wrong and sending all my account details to my last property. Fortunately, the occupants of my last address know me. Barclays are a joke of a bank.

With the new online banking system they have brought in in the last few weeks payments from my girlfriend take 3 days now instead of up to 2 hours...

go in and talk to someone else / phone up the call center, ask them to remove the fee and overdraft and give you written confirmation its been done.

rinse and repeat until you get someone who actually knows what they are doing then close the account and try and find a different bank if you feel suitably vexed (i'd recommend against santantanantanadare who seem to be getting really bad reviews for customer service)

You sure do a lot of strolling, don't you? Also, see your dentist. They can help with this issue. You won't find what you need here on the internets.

Go into the bank and show them the bit of paper you signed when you agreed to cancel the overdraft.

Of course, I'm assuming you weren't daft enough to leave without having written evidence that you requested the overdraft to be closed :D

Paper?

There was no paper... As I said this all took place in with the bank advisor in her little cubicle. Done it all on computer.

I'll be heading back there on Monday to demand an explanation.

Just remember that some poor sod clicked the wrong button and assumed that everything was done.

I'm not implying you're like this, but it ****s me off when people rock up to a sales assistant/bank clerk etc. and give them hell, demanding that it's unsatisfactory, what can be done about it etc. etc. when it's purely a simple mistake.

Yes, people shouldn't make mistakes, but it'll happen on occasion. More people just need to realise that **** happens and they need to get on with their lives.

Again, just for clarity, I'm not saying this is you! :p
