Banned!

Back in the old days I used to regularly get banned from delphi forums. I used to just set up a new account with the next number on the end, eg MrRage27. I think I got up to about 57.

Ah if/when I have some free time in the future I fully intend to buy one of these multiplayer flight sims. Have seen a few of the youtube clips.

It's amazing how people respond, some think that because they have some form of internet authority on these things that they are elevated to some superior being who shall not be questioned, and go completely mental when they face resistance. I suspect it's actually a medical condition tbh, no rational person would behave like that. It's hard to describe their reactions and it's something I've never managed to describe adequately, but luckily a 16 year old girl came along to show me the ways:

The funny thing is they all start on VATSIM, thinking that they're the new big dog in town and start calling the shots as ATCs, until the real pros get fed up with them and punt them off. VATSIM is used by loads of professionals for all manner of things so unless you know exactly what you're doing, you're not gonna last.

They then take their holier-than-thou attitude, add in the "we're former VATSIM experts" to the mix, conveniently forgetting to add the "but we got kicked off because we're idiots" part and you have some of the screechiest, hostile, arrogant pricks under the sun infiltrating all manner of flight sims.

Of course people like myself absolutely thrive on this kind of thing which always makes for interesting viewing.

We're very strict in MM and that's to help protect the members - People tend to get one or two strikes before they actually bother to read the rules, that's quite noticeable. A total of six strikes means you're banned from using the MM but we don't permanban people for MM rule breaks unless we have a very, very good reason to do so. I can't think of more than a handful of instances where that's been done.

Shayper? :p

Flight Sims tend to attract some of the most militant idiots in the world, people have made very successful YouTube channels off the back of taking the mick out of them.

Some are hilarious, you can hear them really frothing at the tiniest little transgressions :D
I remember posting something on a Virtual Airline forum once when they were taking it all too seriously, about grown men pretending to be pilots. I didn’t last long after that...

Edit: Probably something about having to pass a checkflight and a “Rules” type exam to gain a rank!

Don’t really use any other forums, OCUK 4 LYF

Well the forum is simple and clean. Not full of injected emojis feeling like a spin off of Facebook and twitter full of likes, dislike, love, information, useful, that everyone jumps on if they do or don't like a post. Making it look like a form of Reddit.

So many forums I see now, they aren't as such having discussions but they'll dislike posts like no tomorrow.

We all know you're getting perma banned soon anyway ;) Keep posting whilst you still can :D

"Like" buttons encourage partisan behaviour in my opinion.

A long time ago, I made a great number of friends through flight simming and I still keep in touch with many of them now. I've had three or four trips to the USA when I was involved with the MAAM-SIM R4D package with great weekends at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum promoting the product. We got a ride in a B25 because of that which was excellent and it's because of my knowledge of aircraft systems through using Aerowinx PS1/1.3/X that I got a chance on a flight deck visit to actually fly a real 744. That's if you count changing the heading through the MCP as really flying a 744 :D

A highlight of the year was the flight sim exhibition at the national motorcycle museum where we met up and always had a good time. It's strange how something as silly as pretending to be a pilot can forge such long lasting friendships.

The comments about their forums are so true, I don't think I ever got banned but people did, just for making the smallest of negative comments about products, addons, etc. Very odd.

Does anyone else often find themselves (anon) browsing some forum or other, and being amazed (horrified) at how many of the posters have "banned" under their forum name?

There are some places (Escapist mag forums for instance), where in a typical thread, 90% of the posters went on to be banned :p

It makes me laugh but also saddens me. I'm a big free speech advocate, and I'm naturally drawn to more chaotic forums which have little/no moderation. I also think there is a need for places where you can post completely anon without needing to sign up. Where people can be almost completely free to do whatever daft crap they like. Places like 4chan.

But more than that, you often find on these (tightly moderated) platforms, that people end up perma-banned for a single mistake that somebody decided was deserving of (virtual) death sentence.

I wonder if many of these places or moderators realise the effect of cutting people off from communities they have invested themselves in, for one incident that they don't approve of.

Also I'm not talking in any way about these forums. I don't notice lots of people being banned here (besides the bots).
Mess with the bull, you're gonna get the horns. It doesn't matter how much someone has 'invested' themselves in a community (also lol) if they do something which means they can't be part of that community any more. That's a consequence.

Holding 4chan up as anything other than a cesspool of edgelord numpties doesn't add to your argument either.

The moderation here is why I've been a member for so long. The mods deserve huge credit.

There was a period (piggymongate) for those very-old-timers that remember when things got a bit over zealous but generally these forums are excellent.

100% this

+1

maybe the reason i've not noticed too much overzealous modding on forums in general is i tend not to hang around too long in communities with that kind of built-in toxicity.

the other main forum i'm on has only 1 banned member (by which i mean "not a spambot" ban, those don't count) which is kind of surprising.

Been a good day today. Manage to get myself banned from two sub-Reddits and one website, by asking for advice :p

Me: join site, ask for advice in first post.
Get banned with message, "You have to be a part of the community and contribute before you can post your own questions."
Me: "But I have literally no idea about this subject. I wanted to ask the people here who are the experts. I have literally nothing to contribute!"
Mod: "We're not here to answer your questions. The world does not revolve around you."

It's so far from the internet as it used to be. Where information just flowed. Now it's all gated "communities" where you have to have 100s of posts before you can even make your own thread. And woe betide you if you ask a question without the required "reputation" to do so.

Depressing.

Think I'll just stick to this place and hope you're all experts in everything :p
