Banned!

Been a good day today. Manage to get myself banned from two sub-Reddits and one website, by asking for advice :p

Me: join site, ask for advice in first post.
Get banned with message, "You have to be a part of the community and contribute before you can post your own questions."
Me: "But I have literally no idea about this subject. I wanted to ask the people here who are the experts. I have literally nothing to contribute!"
Mod: "We're not here to answer your questions. The world does not revolve around you."

It's so far from the internet as it used to be. Where information just flowed. Now it's all gated "communities" where you have to have 100s of posts before you can even make your own thread. And woe betide you if you ask a question without the required "reputation" to do so.

Depressing.

Think I'll just stick to this place and hope you're all experts in everything :p

Just remember, your life is definitely better than the life of a reddit moderator with that sort of attitude. :p

His parents probably turned the heating off in the basement, or maybe he ran out of cheetos.

Anyone know what happened to Rofflay? Noticed that they have been smacked with the permaban hammer.

Also where do I find the FAQ? I haven't read the rules on here for a while and I can't find them!

Reddit is absolute tosh anyway, I've never understood the appeal. It's just people doing everything they can for karma, and then editing and re-editing posts to say thanks for all the upvotes.

Stick your upvotes on your CV, you'll go far in life :p

Once stumbled upon the Reddit account of a girl I know IRL - seems like nice enough in person if a little quiet but some of her postings on Reddit are up there with some of the more toxic stuff I've seen online.

Before today I had literally used it once before :p

After today I'm not sure I'll bother again :p

r\subject : "We don't accept *those* questions about subject. You need to ask about that in r\subject\while wearing a hat"
r\subject\while wearing a hat : "You need to ask about that in r\subject\while wearing a green hat"
r\subject\while wearing a green hat : "We only discuss subject from the perspective of a conjoined Mexican twin's druglord step-father. You need r\subject\..."

In fairness pretty much everybody is a different person when piloting a keyboard.

I mean i try to be reasonably polite when online bit irl i'm a total **** :P

Does anyone else often find themselves (anon) browsing some forum or other, and being amazed (horrified) at how many of the posters have "banned" under their forum name?

There are some places (Escapist mag forums for instance), where in a typical thread, 90% of the posters went on to be banned :p

Honesly no, unless you know their posting history I have to assume they deserved it. In the places I visit at least people get banned for a reason and its not because the admins are falling ice crystals found in blizzards. Even in reddit groups which are amongst the most toxic places I've ever seen actual bans are rare so not sure where you've been hanging out.

I once got banned for a year from a large Christian/Bible forum for calling Jesus a naughty name. On the ban screen it said something like "You have been banned for 1 year for referring to our Lord Jesus Christ as s **************. Perhaps you should take your time think 'What would Jesus Do?' before posting again." I appealed and told them that Jesus would forgive me and reinstate my account - they changed it to a permaban. :D :p

. . . I also think there is a need for places where you can post completely anon without needing to sign up. Where people can be almost completely free to do whatever daft crap they like. . . .
Why?
Do you favour people deliberately being offensive in public anonymously?
Are you ashamed of your opinions?

Sometimes it can be for underserved. I "very large" admin of a photography group banned me after I posted a picture of him at Whitby goth festival teaching a group of photographers with the words "amazing who you bump into when you go to Whitby goth festival :D".

He banned me with the message that personal insults and bullying would not be tolerated. I was totally at a loss as to what I had done wrong. if i had gone to Edinburgh and saw him teaching a group there I would have taken the same picture and posted it with the same message.

I could only think he thought I was implying something because it was Whitby Goth festival and his very large size.

tried to appeal and put my case across but he wasnt havent it, said he thought it was me who reported him to council and the fire brigade when he held a pyrotechnics photo shoot (which i attended btw) the previous year but could never prove it was me but my attitude towards him with my portrait of him showed my true nature that i didnt like him and had it in for him.

I do actually know who reported him but can't be bothered telling him if he's going to be like that. Still banned almost 2 years later. Shame as its a big group with almost 100,000 members
