Bargain!!!

Which would be a different engine, with a different belt kit and a lot easier access, wouldn't it?

I've not told you eBay was god, I told you that it can often be on par or even slightly cheaper than trade prices at motor factors.

If you were actually reading and comprehending my posts, you'd understand that I've not "changed tack" at all.

Because jon.bda can't read, and thought he's try and make it look like I was using 182 prices when his argument started failing.

Why is this even an argument

The fella got a cheap motor which he thinks he can fix up and make a bargain runaround for his other half. Who cares whether it costs him £150 or £200 to fix it?

Because the fact it'll cost £150 - £200 to fix it and several hours of labour is quite a big detail to overlook, especially when talking in context of getting a bargain.

From the Original post it seemed like a perfectly serviceable, MOT'd runabout for £100. That's a bargain. A old clio that needs at least several hours of spannering and a few hundred quid spend on it is less so.

Then the second debate has sparked up as the OP has claimed buying parts off of ebay means 'Paying through the nose', but hasn't once mentioned what sort of discount he receives from his motor factors and realistically how much everything is going to cost with the discount.

I think you'll struggle to beat ebay for parts by much. I've picked up two front indicators, a service kit (minus cambelt) and thermostat for £35 to my door for an old A4 i'm trying to shift. Motor factors weren't coming close, even with 'trade' discount.

Mate just stop it now, or you'll turn this into another witch hunt against you.

Just step away from the keyboard and pretend this thread never existed. You're making yourself look a fool.

Really? Is it that you have no idea of how sales works, or are you just stupid?

The funny thing is that if someone tells you you're receiving maximum discount, you believe them.

Maximum literal discount is 100%.
Maximum trade discount might be 30%
'Maximum' private sale discount might be 20%, unless my 'mate' Mike walks in in which case it's 5%.

The point being that there is not really such a thing as a maximum discount as if the bloke's mum walked in, you can be sure he'd give her a better discount than he gives MikeHiow. You're just deluded that everyone's your mate.

Interested to hear how much the repairs come to when the car is back on the road :)

And just *facepalm* at some of the pettyness in this thread. Ah well, come to expect it from here recently.

Out of interest jon.bda, what do you do for a living?

Yes, I must be deluded, I was probably hallucinating when we were out on the beer last weekend too, right?

Each company will have a policy of the maximum discount they can give customers, or a minimum mark-up, whichever way you wish to look at it. Maximum discount is the maximum discount they can offer, it isn't rocket science?

You tripped up on a similar assumption a while ago, and you've only managed to fail harder this time.

Quite possibly actually.

You wouldn't think.

'Mum, you need a new oil filter but maxmium discount is only 20% as that's what we gave to MikeHiow last Friday. So be a dear and PPG me a tenner, thanks.'.

How did you all manage to fall out over a 100 quid car, dear god :D

Remember, no matter what you do, no matter what car you talk about, what line of business you are in, what class of air travel you fly or where you live, MikeHow has a 'friend' who is one better.

Literally without fail, there is a 'friend' to reference to make his point in any debate.

How handy.

He must have 500 friends. Popular guy.
