Yes. Everyone should have re-skilled and not clung to the past. They'd be no better off now if the pits had stayed open, China was destined to destroy western manufacturing through massive natural resources and labour pool. Western industries had to adapt and change or suffer longer term, it still needs to change today as we went to the wrong sector.

Entire communities were left to decay. Pits had to close I agree but the social cost was huge. How do you reskill so many miners ?

Click of your shoes of course. Then all you need is a bike and et voila, a job appears over the horizon. Just at the end of the yellow brick road..

It was clearly a mistake to abandon swathes of the country to a 'managed decline', but what we have witnessed over the last week or so it a concerted effort by some of the right to re-enforce old myths and re-write history in certain ways. Must be just co-incidental that the local elections, spring board for the GE, are just round the corner..
