I'm not talking about Dimple. I am talking about the argument that miners were low paid vs the argument that they earned far more than most in any other industry.

Well I think that's what the whole conversation has been hinged upon so far, don't you?

What do the Government figures show in this respect then, low v high comparative wages?

But if you insist on going back to Dimple, the truth is this evidence neither refutes or corroborates his claim. That is the truth of it.

It certainly helps add a bit of context beyond 'my pal dave' and certainly acts as an indicator.

It is very relevant.

Pic of Castiel and Buffetslayer after seeing that PIC

All in the best of fun lads, no hard feelings :-)

You do realise that the deductions include a loan repayment of £9.70, Savings contributions of £35, £8.39 pens supplement (AVC)..so his net pay would have been £123.09, so not £70.00, There is also no overtime payments on that payslip, which would have given us a better picture of what a miner could take home outside of their basic pay, also if you look at his gross pay to date and if my math is up to it, if you assume the tax years is April to April, he has earned (up until Jan) an average of £213 per week gross and £171 a week net on average for the year to date and a £105 in savings (I assume a thrift club), so we can assume that this is one of the lower payslips he has received, and thus why it was used to illustrate poor wages for miners......but in the interests of clarity I will concede the point as far as my claim is concerned, at least as far as Thurcroft Colliery and S.Yorks is concerned, although if you take what the chaps were saying in the video that Estebanrey supplied, Notts Collieries were on a lot more, given that he stated that the £18.43 bonus you see on that weekly payslip, they were getting every day.

(although Buffetslayers claims are supported by the examination of the payslip in detail)

Good find though and interesting site, Lackerknacker.

Yes in as much as he said miners earned a lot more than anyone else. I think the amount he alluded to is questionable - and I have already stated that in a previous post. I said the £300 per week figure would maybe be possible given bonuses and OT - but the higher figures do not seem reasonable.

What do the Government figures show in this respect then, low v high comparative wages?

Well, from the various sources I have seen (most of which I have posted, but some I can't) the concensus so far seems to be that in the mid 80's miners wages were around £190 per week, which according to the post I made earlier is approx 25% higher than the manufacturing industry.

Also, looking at the data, historically miners were paid more than the 'manufacturing' industry throughout the 70's as well. So as an indicator of if they were high paid, I have to conclude that in relation to other industry the answer must be yes. As high has been claimed? I doubt it, but then I have already made my position about that clear a few pages back.

With regard to them being 'greedy' I think asking for over a 25% pay increase when you alread earn 25% more than the manufacturing industry ( I should note that the scope of 'manufacturing' is not defined) then it could be viewed as a 'greedy' approach. It does certainly appear that they were asking for special treatment. That said, I have said all along, due to the nature of their work, and the hitorical dangers that it is fair to say they should earn more. But that much more? it does seem a fairly unreasonable demand.

It certainly helps add a bit of context beyond 'my pal dave' and certainly acts as an indicator.

I have no argument there. But do you really think it is definitive?

The claim that Miners could (and did) earn millionaires wages is also not too wide of the mark, in 1983 a Miner could (with overtime) earn up to £600-£800 a week...this in a year when the average weekly wage was around £100, to a fella on £75 a week, coal miners wages would seem like a millionaires salary.....

oh I mustn't :p

and you do realise there were nights on the payslip too?, course you do but you are not objective or fair at all. The great Castiel, put to the sword, FACT.

Yes I do, he was paid £2 as night shift premium, so it doesn't effect the overall pay all that much. And I was being entirely objective...I conceded (although I have done so already) the point, as well as gave some clarity to buffetslayers and dimple's positions...all borne out by the very payslip supplied.

You rhetoric though is somewhat misplaced.

No, be my guest, make a fool of yourself. If you want to regurgitate the entire argument all over again then do so....I don't feel it will do you any favours however, as it ws quite some time ago that I conceded the selective quote, as well as offered a clarification of that. Knock yourself out.

Yeah sure I do, be sure there are many reading this thread who think you need to grow up, grow up and put your hands up to this fiasco.

For a grown man who stated he worked for two weeks in the early 1980s in a coal mine, you do act like someone much, much younger....

LOL
