Batman Arkham City - Thread

To be fair to Rocksteady they have implemented full DX11 features + PhysX with Nvidia's help so some of the delay was obviously down to that & implementing Steam Cloud for saves on Steam bought versions.

Maybe for the first delay, but not the second one. Plus they are still using the same engine, so PhysX is still there from the last game which the Unreal engine supports anyway. So the first delay was probably to maximize console sales, rather than adding anything that wasn't already there.

I've never understood the "must have it on day 1" mentality!

Is it suddenly going to become a rubbish game just because it's released a few weeks later, or you can't play it on the day it's released?

I'll just be happy when it is released :)

I agree with you in some ways confused but......

The game has been out for nearly a month already on the consoles and as said by barmyllama there really isn't a good enough reason for this length of a delay and therefore it really has just probably been to get loads of sales on consoles instead and most likely the excuses that every game company use about avoiding PC piracy....

If it had only been a week after consoles, no problem there at all really, but a whole month and a bit after the console release is a bit much IMO and as I said before I think since we PC gamers have had to wait this long, we should have got a demo of the game for the first mission.

I can wait for a superior version, why do you need a demo when the game has been in the wild so long and been widely reported as a fantastic title?

To maybe give us a little taste of it and not make us feel like were left out whilst the console owners have been able to play it since the 17th October........?

Just my opinion obviously, but what harm would it have done to just have the first mission like it was for Arkham Asylum?

As I said before if it had been a week or 2, no problems there, but a whole month and a bit for me is a bit too much of a gap without any proper/real reason/excuse to have that much of a gap.

Personally I wouldn't say a superior version either, better for graphics, yes, better for the extra wee effects, yes (however IMO I couldn't care less about physx, doesn't add that much to the game apart from a few fancy/gimmicky effects that sacrifice performance a fair bit no doubt again just IMO)

I define BF 3 for the PC as the superior version to the consoles version.

First bit that short?!

Even just giving us something where there are no missions but a few thugs to beat up and a small section of arkham city to explore.

I have given pretty much my reasons as to the point above, just my opinion :)

Who cares what other people are doing? The game is clearly going to be superior in frame rate and visual fidelity.

It has nothing to do with what other people are doing, as I said it is just more that I feel that the PC gamers should have something a a bit more extra in order to justify the wait time (I would say exactly the same if it had been the other way round) than just physx, which won't even work for a lot of people and if it does some may not even bother with it due to being a performance hit and adding hardly anything extra to make it worth while and considering how big/popular the game and the gap between platform release, I just personally find it a little lacking the reasons they have used for the big delay.

Yes it will be better, but again I wouldn't exactly say superior (IMO) as I said BF 3 is superior overall compared to console version.

All just my opinion :)

Not the same engine at all. Its using the latest Unreal Engine with enhanced HDR lighting with god rays as well as PhysX+DX11. I think this may well be the 1st PC game using the latest Unreal engine. I suspect its to do with that & shoving Steamworks on at the last minute for Cloud Saves on Steam only bought copies. I bought this game & all DLC on 360 its well worth the wait even if the story mode is short the other content is around 100 hours + so plenty of gameplay to get stuck into ;)

Hmm, how short is the story exactly?

I loved the length of AA, not too long and not too short and this was excluding the time I took to complete the challenges, riddle challenges etc., just the main/pure story line.

Doesn't really matter anyway as I know that I am going to love the game and will be completing it 3 or 4 times (everything that is!) just like I did on AA! :D

1st story only playthru on 360 took me under 5 hours. 2nd story only playthru on Hardest took me 2.5 hours but that does not include how many times you die (a lot on hardest) & I knew exactly where to go & how to solve certain puzzles (game remembers from your 1st playthru certain puzzle solutions as Arkham City now has New Game+ mode as well as New Game if you do not want it to remember your 1st playthru). When you start your 2nd playthru if you select New Game+ it also carries over all your Batsuit Gadgets/Upgrades so makes the game much easier. If you ignore that & start again with no upgrades Hardest mode becomes a hardcore player only mode as its pretty tough in places some of the boss fights even fully upgraded are tough without upgrades they are almost impossible!

Do not let that put you off though as after the story mode you have around 90+ hours of collectables, combat & predator challenges & side missions. You can complete story mode without doing all the side missions. If you do the side missions as well when your doing story its more like 40-50 hours. The game has 440 collectables & most of these require you to solve a puzzle (some are complex not just pick this up on a ledge & require certain gadget upgrades or certain batskills to pickup). All in its an easy 100 hours content which for an SP based game is something nowadays. The story mode is around half the size of Arkham Asylum but the other content is about 10 times bigger When playing you realise after a while just how much content the game has its actually quite overwhelming in a good way as you then understand how much content you have to get through so dedicate a lot of gaming hours to it :D

Hmm, slightly disappointing in some ways about "the story mode is around half the size of Arkham Asylum", but I don't mind as long as the main story line/plot is as good or obviously preferably better than AA storyline (AA is excellent and probably one of the best story lines in a game for A LONG time IMO and it will be interesting to see how/if eidos has topped it)

And as you said it is good that you have all the extras, side missions etc. as well which makes the game even longer and makes sure that you get all the enjoyment out of it! :D

I may only play through this one twice instead!

All of it on normal first time and then game+ on hard
