I've never had any problems with XP and think it's a decent OS (at least in terms of Microsoft's past efforts) but to put it simply, Windows 7 is better in pretty much every way.
Yes, there are a few differences in the graphical interface, but most of it is pretty minor and if you know how to use XP, you'll quickly get accustomed to Win 7 within a few days of use. Also the vast majority of changes and tweaks are fairly logical changes and don't encroach on the end user experience.
With regards to general desktop performance and game performance, I didn't notice any decrease coming from XP (using the same hardware). Using Windows 7 feels just as responsive as XP despite all the added graphical effects, plus some games run slightly faster for me.

There's really no arguement here, expect from a tiny minority who think that their niche requirements in an OS is representative of the entire population.
