Thanks guys for all your suggestions. 
With 5850, my remaining setup still seemed pretty powerful. I was confident of using it for at least another year.
However 7950 has changed all that and has left my cpu, mobo and ram in the dust. It is crying out for more powerful platform.
It seems Q9550/Q9650@4Ghz are best paired with 5850, 5870, 460, 470 and 480. Any more powerful gpus would be better suited to socket 1156, 1155, 1366 cpus etc.
