BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

We'll see when it comes round to the start of the season but in my experience the closer people come to the point where they'd actually be missing out, the easier they find it to justify something to themselves.
I havent watched EPL since 1992 - never had Sky Sports. Im 100% sure I wont be getting it for F1 if I cant even justify it for EPL - I think the normal F1 fan is far more principled than the normal footy fan IMHO...

Interesting thing. June 2011 - Sky Sports 1 managed to get a 0.9% viewer share.

So the big step up in audience numbers is obviously going to happen...

Imagine how large the jump in audience numbers is going to be if they stick the F1 on SKy Sports 4 which got an enormous 0.1% viewer share.

For next year maybe, For 2013?

If Redbull dominate 2012 and the season is wrapped up like it is now. Are people going to be willing to continue to pay the monthly sub to watch something that is starting to bore? It only takes one poor season and the viewing figures are likely to take a real nose dive. At the moment we have a poor season and we all still watch because... Well it's just there. Would you be happy to pay £30 a race for the remainder of this season say? Knowing Vettle and Redbull have it pretty much wrapped up.

- Half the races on the BBC is worse than none; a genuine waste of license payers money since no fan is interested in half a season, they'll either go to Sky or not bother. The BBC press release was the worst example of hypocritical newspeak I've ever seen. Doupleplusgood! I suspect the resulting drop in viewing figures will allow the BBC to justify giving up the remainder in 2018 giving Sky the monopoly they want.

- UK viewing figures are approximately 5m, while the cost is £50m/year, that's a cost of £10/year per viewer. Now I can't afford Sky, I'm unemployed, but even the Sky apologists can't justify a cost of £600/year for someone who can, but isn't interested in the rest of Sky's programming. It's extortion made possible only by Sky's monopoly.

- After 30 years watching F1, this is the end for me, and I suspect for many others. The figures suggest that Sky won't sustain the viewing figures that the BBC has. I'd like to know what F1's sponsors and advertisers will think of this.

- Finally, this is a sport that the UK excels at, we win world championships with our cars and drivers. It puts the vain hopes every year at Wimbledon or whenever we sit down to watch an international football match into perspective. Why the BBC and those in power can't get behind this and use it to promote jobs, investment or even pride in ourselves I don't understand.

It's sad day, and I'm disgusted with everyone involved, Bernie, the BBC, the Murdoch's criminal corporate activities & the Government who have been complicit in giving them what they want.
Very good set of points - the madness is if I wanted to spend that £600 on a sub, Id rather go to a couple of circuits instead. From next year onwards I wont be a either a TV spectator or at a circuit :(.

F1s a spectator sport, its why advertisers and sponsors pay so much to have a slice of the action - sounds like they have to get used to reduced TV figures and more than likely Silverstone wont be as packed as it usually is - really feel sorry for the BRDC and the (delayed) effort they made in getting that circuit up to 'code' - pretty sure Derek Warwick is just as concerned...

We have been through this, Whitmarsh is the only one saying that. Bernie is not and the bbc are not.

Wouldn't trust anything the little gobblin says to anyone I suppose though.

I don't trust Whitmarsh either, he soon changed his tune when they had a meeting and he was told how much money they would be getting.

Then it becomes a good deal for F1.

The teams had the power to stop this if they wanted. Then the cheque book comes out and who knows what they have been promised for the new coming agreement to stfu.

They said they were going to bring this sport closer to the fans and listen to the views of fans. Then they do this.

Haven't had time to read the whole thread but as you guys seem to be in the know I thought I might ask. Just watching qualifying and Martin Brundle just said he wondered which drivers would be in the jobless queue along with them. Will the BBC be using Sky presenters.

The whole thing sux for me as I can't even get sky if I wanted it because of the high trees around my flat. Not sure even if I could I would spend out, couldn't justify it on my budget.

Saw on twitter this morning that Sky have said both themselves and the BBC will use the same commentators for the race but will have different presenters.

You'd think Brundle would be a cert to be the commentator as he's not really tied to the BBC for anything other than F1 but maybe he's upset with the situation and doesn't fancy it next season.

so ive got quali on, the bbc have said nothing about it, and im finding myself not really caring, knowing i wont see it next year and this year is wrapped up.. just doenst feel the same watching it compared to last week.

as a previous poster said, least it will free up weekends!

i 100% wont be getting sky, at most i would ppv at £5 per race.. absolute max, not £20-£25.. thats 5x more

exactly, actions speak louder than words.

this is all about short term gain,

actually, it smacks of desperation from all involved.

If they reduce the following in the UK, they reduce the value of everything to do with the F1 brand in the UK.

desperation for money or desperation not to spend money, but as usual no medium term sustainability.

I'm sure he changed his tune after he was told that the races that weren't shown live will be full races and not edited highlights. I'm hoping this is the case.

So now the BBC will probably have to pay more to show the extended highlights as they will have to buy the content from sky? I'm suprised they will be showing the olympics tbh.

I'm sure he then changed it right back again once Bernie promised some cash his way.
He's just as bad as the rest of them are.

Been thinking about this whilst watching Qually today.

I don't "mind" the F1 going to Sky if they've got more money to pay Bernie than the BBC.

What annoys me is that the contract was up for renewal at the end of the 2013 season. The BBC have gone and done this early. That annoys me.

What annoys me is that the BBC statement was putting a complete spin on it, saying how they're delighted etc. No. You're halving the coverage. We are not delighted. Stop putting a stupid spin on it. That annoys me.

What annoys me is that the BBC are going on about woe is us we are so poor, when they could save loads of money by scrapping BBC3, BBC4, Radio 6, Radio Asian Network, Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand, Chris Evans, Chris Moyles. That's where cost saving should be.

What annoys me is lefty hippies trying to somehow blame the sale of the F1 to Sky on the government. If you want to blame anyone other than the BBC's choice of where they're spending the money, it should be previous government when they had the option of protecting certain sporting events.

It boils down to money, and I'll reiterate it again..

BBC relocation £900,000,000
BBC3 £150,000,000
F1 2011 £50,000,000

Quite simply shocking.

Why do people always bring up Jonathan Ross? He hasn't worked for the BBC in something like 2 years. Whatever he's being paid at the moment doesn't really matter.
