BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

What annoys me is lefty hippies trying to somehow blame the sale of the F1 to Sky on the government. If you want to blame anyone other than the BBC's choice of where they're spending the money, it should be previous government when they had the option of protecting certain sporting events.

I'm sorry but I blame everyone, including this government, and sure, if you like, the last one too for the reason you gave, while this government is in the pocket of the Murdochs, their policies re the BBC are exactly aligned with Murdoch's own stated position in wanting to see a massive reduction of influence, presence and funding. Throw in Bernie for being a greedy ******* and the BBC for being spineless, hypocritical and making poor choices and I think we've covered everyone, so don't call me a leftie hippy simply because I'm prepared to point the figure where it belongs, left or right.

Sky have a ridiculous monopoly.

If someone could serve up satellite tv with all the trimmings for £30 they'd make billions a year, and sky would soon come screaming back down to earth.

My parents have the entire package (Sky World) in HD, with multiroom and it's just an horrendous waste of money. ~£70 a month?! No thanks.

All this will do is further that monopoly.. And then they'll sneak the adverts in when the viewing figures die down.

lol at this comment on the bbc website:

"I noticed on the Breakfast ( News ) show this morning that Chris Hollins was taking part in some kind of downhill home-made go-kart race.
Have the BBC considered applying for the exclusive rights to screen this under-exposed sport as a replacement to F1. I can't imagine it will cost nearly as much, and with the money it saves, the BBC could afford to make more shows in which people rummage about in their lofts for stuff they can sell ?"

:D

Interesting article.

http://www.fanvision.com/F1/TheExperts/OffTheRecord/More_is_less

Highest viewership for anything on Sky Sports for the week of 10th 17th July was an enormous 248,000.

BBC's coverage of Silverstone brought in 4.94million.

So how is Sky's coverage going to increase the viewing numbers?

i cant wait for the sponsors to see them numbers and run to the hills. im sure the teams will shout break away asap if it doesnt got 100% back FTA.

I agree with so many people here, and Im gutted that the beeb are letting this go...
Having said that, I have just been checking out the VM site to see how much Sky is, as unless the BBC are going to show the full race delayed (which Id be happy with) I will be getting some package so that I can watch all the races in full...

Sorry, but I want to see the whole season, not half of it. Id rather it was the BBC, but I will go and buy what I need to to see it...

Doesn't mean Im not fuming about it though...

Edit: £22.50 ontop of the M package so £35 odd.

Far too much for a race per month.

seems a good deal for sky (assuming they didn't pay that much) a reasonable deal for the BBC and a bad deal for F1,

obviously Bernie et al don't rate viewers as particularly high value, but likes the ready cash, this is going to make it even harder for the teams to find sponsorship.

I think sky will get more subscribers, F1 will lose viewers and the BBC will save money but lose viewers.

The other motor sports that Sky have covered over the years require a fraction of the funding that F1 does. F1 could be in for a shock.

What are the figures like when the football season is on, seeing as they was virtually nothing of worth on (that i'm aware of) for that week? 20/20 Cricket being the highlight pretty much back that up, there wasn't even ODI or Test cricket on.

I don't see any way in which Sky can possibly increase the viewership of F1 but nor do I see the point in making silly viewer number comparisons between one of the most popular races for the UK on the F1 calender and dead weeks in terms of events for Sky Sports. It's completely irrelevant.

What would be more relevant, is the total number of Sky Sports subscribers, as that would be a nice figure to compare with, I bet it would need a huge proportion of existing customers to watch to get anywhere near 5 million.

The fact that this decision has been made just a week or two after the Newscorp/Murdoch scandal is also hilarious/depressing.

Which sponsors would run for the hills and why? It's just the uk, when canada had no f1 driver their figures plummeted to below a million. F1 didn't suddenly go into armegeddon.

Chatting with a mate who lives in the states about this and how the viewing figures would plummet he mentioned the average viewing figure in the states is 800k. Not sure how true that is.

I think we are all peed off about this but overstating our worth to causing trouble for f1 when the viewing figures dip.

Until I hear some of the massive sponsors like Vodafone etc moaning I have little reason to think the sponsors will be that upset.

Champions League Final got under 1.5 million viewers

Manchester United vs Chelsea at the beginning of may got 2.6 million

As I know nothing about football, I'm guessing they are quite big games.

Valencia has the lowest viewer figures this year I believe, and it was on BBC2 and still got 3.9 million viewers.

Boo hoo, I don't like BBC in general for the sheer amount of utter turd they produce and the tv licence they get no matter the quality of their programming, sure some is great, the majority is horrific.

I don't think anything the BBC do are making it better than ITV(except the adverts obviously). I can't stand Brundle and Jordan and hope Sky don't get either, Coulthard is find, dumphries is fine, the woman is irksome and, lets be honest you're supposed to have a hot chick with sports cars.

90% of the prerace stuff is drivel, theres 3 minutes of relevant info, a huge amount of absolute garbage and 2-3 funny quotes some weeks from some people. I'm sure Brundle gets a heck of a lot more than a "normal" presenter, to ask the same damn questions in pieces they do.

Meh, I have Sky sports, I'll have this added on so for me Sky sports just increased in the value it offers for me.

The footage(most of it) doesn't come from the BBC, the commentary can be anyone and I can't stand Brundle, so getting that footage on Sky with either the same or maybe even better commentary, I can't see a downside at all.

If you were stuck with the BBC, if I was stuck with the BBC< I can still see all the races, all the same guff, so I really can't see the issue. Plenty of people watch the races after recording them anyway, so whats new.

Football is difficult, people don't really go to pubs to watch the F1, while literally millions would have been packed into pubs to watch the champs league final around the world as its a more social/pack oriented sport.

I tend to not do so much anymore but I had sky sports, could watch at home but still went to the pub with mates to watch huge games.

it wouldnt take a genius to work out that a pub will get more than three viewers for the big games. im sure they take that into account for the viewing figures

It's not been confirmed that the BBC will be showing all the races in their entirety so i dont really know how you've come to that conclusion?

I think you underestimate how big a fan base the UK has. As has been said, Valencia, the most boring race this season had 3.9 million viewers in the UK...If the USA, a country with a much larger population than the UK only has an average viewer number of 800k then it starts to become clear that it could be a big problem for viewing figures.
