BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

I'd like to think so... But I doubt it tbh,

It's quite pricey going to a race, Especially if you stay in this country  :(

No. Watching for real and on TV are different, and no substitute for the other.
And flying to other races is a completely different financial ball game.

In what way? Silverstone attendance? Teams relocating? What company will lose money because of this?

I don't see F1 fans just stopping watching it. (maybe a tiny minority).

Sadly its just another sport that been let go to Sky

Like Rugby, Football, Golf, Tennis, Cricket, etc..

It was one of the last sports that had free coverage of every event.

And I believe the main reason for this is...you guessed it...MONEY!

Put simply - BBC just didnt want to fork out the money for F1 and felt that that money could be utilised better, elsewhere.

F1 will eventually turn into one of those sports that you occaisionally catch when channel flicking on sky or cable.

Like IndyCar, DTM, or the KART championship.

The reporting will eventually subside and wane, I mean, why would the BBC dedicate the same amount of web rescources and advertising of races when its soon to have no coverage at all. (when it drops it completely)

Just shows you what sheer greed does to your head. Bernie Ecclesctone is quite the evil little man.

Yeah lol, wtf are you on about?!

You think BBC3 and BBC4 and bull**** like RASTAMOUSE is utilising the money better elsewhere?!

BBC needs to get a grip, maybe the new commisioner will chop the utter dross away.

I dont care about F1 anymore. Every single year its been getting worse and worse, not better or going from strength to strength.

The drivers are scared to go too fast, there is too much health and safety, and the FIA are total morons.

Half the tracks are in crappy countries no one cares about, its an embarrassment. Abu Dahbi Grand Prix? lol.

Look out for the Somalian Grand Prix though, those Pirates will pay Bernie nicely.

Story in the paper today about how the BBC spent 32m on inconvenience allowances for staff who may be required to change shift with as little as 2 weeks notice. Madness.

Regarding the racing though - it's the worst and getting worse? Each to their own but I'm enjoying the racing as much now as the days of mansell/senna and hill/schumacher.

I guess it's the characters as much as anything else, but the days of hakkinen and schumacher were a bit dull for me.

Dr pain, i hate to give you some ammo for what is overall a post i disagree with*, but have you seen what they are replacing spa with every other year?

*disagree that F1 is getting worse, agree that BBC3, BBC4, etc should have shut down instead of F1 and that some track locations are getting worse *cough* france *cough* valencia

What you all fail to realise is that the BBC trust report said that F1 hits or exceeds it's targets in nearly every age group and also consistently beats every other channel in it's time slot and also does pretty well against all shows on a Sunday regularly as well.

Directly from the report "Formula 1 has been a significant success in 2009/10, exceeding all of its reach, average audience and cost per viewer hour targets" (Full report here (pdf)

Also from the report "Formula 1 and Premier League highlights attract a younger (16-34) male audience that is otherwise hard to reach,
whilst the Olympics and Wimbledon perform well with a more balanced male and female audience (see Exhibit 24 for
more detail). Six Nations rugby is particularly important in Wales and Scotland. Together, these five events account
for over 70% of the BBC’s sports rights spend."

The BBC Trusts own report states categorically that the BBC's Formula 1 coverage does very well for the BBC, evenwhen costs are included. IMo the pure and simple reason the BBC have dropped it is because no one 'in command' is even remotely interested in it. it's a travesty and I really wish we could do something about it but the contracts have been signed and even if the BBC wanted to do something about it I doubt they can. At the very least they should be broadcasting full race re-runs at every opportunity and not bother with highlights shows like they do for the early hours of the morning races. I record MotoGP on Eurosport and avoid the BBC commentary team cos Charlie Cox has never ridden anything more powerful than a bicycle. yes Toby moody and jules haven't either but they've been commentating on bikes and bike racing for decades and Toby moody does hillclimbs etc.

A quote from Martin Brundles twitter today.

I really like my interview with @Andrew_Frankel in Autocar magazine today. Managed to get me sharing some frustrations about new TV deal too.

Anybody know what was said by Martin?

I really enjoy the racing. Do you want all the GPs at old European circuits only? I bet if Silverstone didn't have the competition from the eastern circuits, it would still be a dump compared to how good it is now.

OK heres some facts from the the mouth of Jake H at camping F1

BBC need to spend less as the government are freezing the Licence fee(i say blame the daily mail) The trust wont allow them to shed the likes of BBC3 so their hands are tied.

BBC coverage will be EXTENDED highlights with extensive in-depth coverage after the race... So think 'forum' but on the main broadcast. More analysis and more interviews with drivers and team players. I imagine it will include a recap and grid-walk pre race.

he didnt mention who would be on the BBC team.

Even extended highlites are terrible. I hate the choppiness and missing the build up and suspense.

Why did they not agree to show full race reruns. F1 could have tried forcing sky's hands.

Trouble is BBC are meant To be airing shows for all people.

Sure, which explains how BBC Asian Network BBC Four and BBC 6 Music survive. They cater for minority audiences and are cheap.

What your statement does not justify is spending huge amounts of money on minority audiences.

I don't see F1 fans just stopping watching it. (maybe a tiny minority).
Tiny minority? I'd guess quite a few will stop watching it. More than half won't watch the half that aren't on the BBC any more, of the remaining half I expect quite a few will also lose interest when they can only watch half the season.

In terms of value for money, BBC 3 and 4 are fantastic. Rastamouse, sure why not? Don't think for a moment the tiny budgets for these is equivalent to F1.
The bottom line is that F1 is way too expensive for a publicly funded free to air service - this is 100% the fault of CVC and Ecclestone.

I dont care about F1 anymore. Every single year its been getting worse and worse, not better or going from strength to strength.
Can't agree with that, I'd certainly say this last decade has been better than the one before.

The drivers are scared to go too fast, there is too much health and safety, and the FIA are total morons.
Did you not see Webber's pass last weekend? Or Hamilton's crash? The drivers are still brave and H&S has probably saved the lives or prevented serious injury of a quarter of the current field over the last few years.

Half the tracks are in crappy countries no one cares about, its an embarrassment. Abu Dahbi Grand Prix? lol.
Those 'countries no one cares about' are important countries. The old world is losing its relative significance, in the 21st Century the story is all about the rising nations.

This.

Jake seemed to have a very good insight into the plans for F1, very much the views of someone who is expected to remain a major part of the coverage. So I think its safe to assume Jake will be staying with the BBC.

He also made great efforts to sing the praises of the Jake/Eddie/DC setup, and how well they worked together, and how it wouldn't work with one and not the other. I would therefore assume that the plan is to keep both of them at the BBC.

Martin Brundle was never mentioned at all.

So reading between the lines, I'd say Jake is staying, the BBC want DC and Eddie to stay, and Martin has put himself 'up for sale'.

jake is the bbc's new golden boy hence he's lined up to do the olympics and a new tv studio show he's been recording. he'l be busy enough without the f1 next year.

as for saving money il say it again why blow £22 million on "the voice" ?! when they could have just made there own for a hell of a lot less, but noooo they go to an american company and buy a show in as its what sky does.
