Bit of a rant coming:

For many years now, i've said that Tony (AP) McCoy should win this, at least once. Day in, day out, he travels up and down the country, has multiple horse rides. Most days in the summer, he'll have 4-5 rides in the afternoon, then fly to another track, get back in the saddle for several more races, fly home, have a bath, and go to bed.

His days in the summer can be up to 21 hours long, and after such a physically demanding day, how many people would get up and do it the next day? He does. I understand there are many jockeys out there that deserve more credit than they get, but this guy wins hundreds of races every single year, even when he rides a horse that's way below standard.

What he does in the saddle is magnificent, he times runs to perfection, and ALWAYS gets the best out of a horse, no matter how little its chances of winning may be. Even after a terrible fall a few years ago left him sidelined for 3 months, he still won the jockeys' title that year, by a comfortable margin too, and he's now won 11 back-to-back jockeys titles.

This is not in any way disrespectful to any of the other contenders, as they are all fantastic athletes, but I certainly feel that this man has done a remarkable job throughout his career, and is overlooked time and again. How can Jenson Button even be compared to this guy? He's won a single race in 130 starts, no world titles to date, and his best finish is 4th in the world championship. You might argue that McCoy's title is only within Britain, and Jenson's is a worldwide affair, but being nominated for this because you won a single race just doesn't cut it for me.

Sorry for such a long post, but I really feel strongly about this, I'm hoping someone else does too :p

I disagree on your choice tho, i feel that its time Joe Calzaghe was recognised, especially after his schooling of Lacy!

I'd tend to agree too, several times people have mentioned Joe Calzaghe and I can understand why! They really need to wake up and actually recognise people like Calzaghe and McCoy, real sportsmen, people who are actually working their backsides off, winning trophies, races, bouts, whatever, and giving them credit for it. The fact neither was nominated really does disgust me.

Whilst you may disagree on my choice, I hope you see my reasoning behind it. I'm a huge horse racing fan, I could go on all day about why jockeys and AP in particular should get more recognition, but I'd probably bore you ;)

I definitely see your reasoning, like you said, its these people that go out there and do the business, month after month, year after year.

Oh, calzaghe is nominated btw, so is Ricky Hatton. Good to see 2 boxers up there :D

an interesting insight to how people have voted so far!

The BBC sport panel need shooting, putting jenson on top!
By the looks of all of those, JC should be favourite to win - 36 sets of votes, JC is top in 18 and 2nd in another 11.

Good to see. I looked at some like Beth Tweddle, Nicole Cooke, and instantly thought they have no chance. Not because they haven't done a good job, but their sports aren't overly popular, so they don't really get a lot of recognition for their efforts. While Button is a multi-million pound superstar who has done nothing spectacular thus far, he's in there amongst the top 10. Murray IMO has done well, but not well enough to win it.

Phil Taylor's an interesting one, can't remember how many world titles he's won now (12 maybe?), wins almost every tournament he enters, yet darts can be argued for not being a real sport.

All in all, it's a load of balls tbh :p

unfortunately, Zara Philips will probably win. Calzaghe deserves it mostly because this year was the culmination of a decades worth of work.

not sure why unfortunate - in terms of a brit dominating and doing the business she has been there THIS year - we can't just recgnise names for their careers - footballers should be banned from this event excpet team of the year since they have so many awards themselves eg pfa etc... then calzage et al would get the recognition they deserve

It's more of popularity contest these days, sadly exposure seems to count to much.

I see the scots have a sense of humour, they nominated Sven :D

it's amusing to see the votes by newspaper types - aaron lennon voted for by the notw - for what exatly? a handful of fleeting albeit impressive sub appearances and a decent season for tottenham - but less impressive goals, assists etc....

Because the winner should be recognised not just for their greatness in the sport, but their ability to attract the public to that sport. Zara Philips has a high profile because of her Royal ties. Yes she may well have ability, but I doubt the average member of the public is really interested.

I agree on JB, he should not be there at all.

I disagree... One performance against an over hyped opponent should not win you the award after years of not fighting the best in the division.

Lacy struggled with the likes of Vanderpool and Sheika... He was also extremely lucky to get the win at the weekend against 3rd rate Vitali Tsypko (who in all honesty was outboxed by Brain Magee :p )

It's not the BBC's fault. It's the actual people that vote!

It just works the same way as XFactor, big brother etc.

For the likes of Michael Owen, Freddie Flintoff etc to win shows it's a popularity vote (i.e. who's been in the press the most).

If it was for ability, dedication, silverware(or the equivalent) then there would be more 'obscure' winners more often.

Along those lines I'd also nominate Andy Robinson, to take a World Cup winning squad and destroy them in quite such a fashion, even allowing for the massive impact of retirements is rather special. ;)

Nicole Cooke would be quite a good winner I think considering she can will with pretty much anything on two wheels in quite varied disciplines but she is probably too low profile to get anywhere near it.

Thats not quite true, a lot of boxers wouldn't fight him for one reason or another, he was also up for the olympics when he was a teenager and was winning amature titles, but they turned round and said he wasn't fit enough  Calzaghe has had a hard time getting the fights, we shall see how good a boxer he is though in march (his hand should have healed by then :p ).

And Button wtf!

Please tell me you are being sarcastic :p with seeing how good he is in March... Against Manfredo :p It's a complete and utter joke of a fight. Manfredo is just as bad as Bika was.

I don't buy into this notion that he has trouble getting fights... He had the chance to go to Denmark for a career high purse and turned it down, he had the offer to fight Beyer and turned it down.. He could have fought Mundine but FW offered him something ridiculous like £50k and would have to be promoted by FW for 4 fights.

IF he fights Kessler (or perhaps Taylor) within the next year then I will give him due credit but his last few opponents (Lacy can be excused) have been quite frankly shocking to say the least!

I have to admit it's a shame he's not landed (for whatever reason) the really big fights, but he was awesome against Lacy. I don't care whether it was because Lacy didn't show up or not, I've never seen someone maintain that tempo for 12 rounds. Fantastic to watch. :D

Jenson as much as I like him should blatantly not be there. If I'm totally honest nobody really stands out for me this year either.

the shortlist is a joke really.

I mean Monty Panaser (sp) - played ok for england at cricket and is now sat in the dressing room in Aus.

Jesson "i'm a future world champ honest" Button - load of pap - wins one race and lives in monaco!

Andy Murray - beat federer once and is now ranked 17 or something in the world but has hardly won a thing/

Difficult to define personality - is it winning, is it being funny, is it being a good loser (british public love a good loser) - Rudsetski (sp) is a classic example when he won it - did nothing in the year he won it and he's canadian for god sake!!!

Zara phillips will win it but personally i think people like McCoy (previously mentioned and well done to op) and Taylor should be up there (not really agreed that darts is a sport but hey! 13 world titles is nothing to be sniffed at). Also Hatton has done well in last couple of years but is a bit in no mans land at present due to his changing weights etc.

Think it will be quite boring this year, also no footballers or rugby players for the first time in ages, in the 10 to vote for.

It does show how slim pickings this years sporting success has been when you look at that list!

Button as has been said wins one race after over 100 trys and gets short listed!

Monty was favourite earlier in the year but now can't get in the team!

Murray won 1 tournament buts done nowt in grand slams yet.

Hatton doesn't deserve it this year one lucky decision isn't really good enough.

At least Zara Phillips, Beth Tweddle, Nicole Cooke and Phil Taylor are genuine champions all be it in what we'd class as minority sports.

Darren Clarke's gonna win it but I do think he's only getting the sympathy vote, fair play to the guy he's had a terrible year and played really well in the Ryder cup under the circumstances but does he really want a trophy reminding him of this year sat on his mantelpiece?

Personally I'd give it to Calzaghe you can argue over the quality of opponents but the Lacy fight was an impressive performance and he won another world title in his other fight.

He won the IBF title in the Lacy fight which he has now given up to fight Manfredo :p

Don't get me wrong, It was a good perfomance... However Lacy is very one dimensional.
