BBC to end Formula 1 television contract early

If Bernie and the FIA had a cap on the money spent or done away with aero\new hybrids it would cost a team a lot less.
And if Ferrari\merc\rb started moaning then I would let them leave.
A cheaper F1 would see the like of Porsche\Lamborghini etc..

Hmm. I'm really not convinved. There's no way both Porsche and Lamborghini will enter F1 and neither will given the current Volkswagon crisis (indeed I wonder how long Audi and Porsche will last together in LMS).

Camel and straw comes to mind. At some point F1 will fall apart and we'll end up with a breakaway series. Not if but when.

Will the argument over the current regs do it? It's going to happen at some point - the power has moved from Bernie to the teams and the teams will dictate the direction they go in. When it does they'll all flock to the new series. F1 is only a business, one which won't survive in the current climate without the big teams and drivers.

It will be scary when it does happen and for good reason, as who wants to see commercial rights deciding what happens and where? You think it's bad at the moment, but Bernie was (briefly) a racing driver, driver agent and owned Brabham before he became the politician he is now... wait until a true banker gets his mitts on F1.

I think the point is that the teams wont dictate the direction for F1 to go in, as its impossible to get them to agree.

At the moment it looks like the "big 2017 rule change" won't happen and we will just carry on as we are now, as nothing can be decided, and when the FIA attempt to take control of their own sport they are blocked or sued.

Martin said he left because of the possibilities of a dedicated channel willing to spend more on new things and they're about the only company that asked for and got permission to have their own cameras on site and in the pitlane before and after other than the World Feed. I do wonder what's going to happen next season as Sky UK, Italy and Germany are all covering the F1 as a joint company for the first time. Should be some scope for cost cutting and maybe some shared features which may mean more time with drivers and team principals as they're 'killing' three birds with one stone.

Hence why I said F1 will fall apart and we'll end up with a breakaway at some point. Maybe not imminently, but I'd be willing to bet it will happen in the next decade and I could be tempted to do so in half that time.

Anyway, I forgot to post this earlier.

Unfortunately, there are countless countries lining up at Bernie's door with big cheques wanting to host a race. Even if we lose USA there will be 20 races next year.

We've had 20+ races scheduled/feared every year for the past half a decade, yet I think only once have we have had more than 19 races (2012).

Who would run it? The teams certainly couldn't, and I shudder at the thought of one of them doimg it anyway. What other regulator would want to take on a proven bunch of selfish, demanding teams either? And unless it's a break away headed up by Bernie, it would be a series with no prompter or agreements with any circuit.

And the FIA are the only body able to regulate a car "World Championship", so it would have to be a " Cup" or a "Series" or something.

The point I was making is that were hardly short of places willing to pay for a race. F1 survived with around 15 a season for ages, and were well above that even if we drop a few.

More details

F1 2015 team budgets:

1. Red Bull Racing (€266m + €35.7m + €167m) = €468.7m
2. Mercedes (€122m + €212.4m + €133m) = €467.4m
3. McLaren Honda (€144.5m + €216.5m + €104m) = €465m
4. Ferrari (€208.5m + €34.5m + €175m) = €418m
5. Williams (€52.5m + €22.9m + €111m) = €186.4m
6. Lotus (€69.5m + €13.6m + €56m) = €139.1m
7. Toro Rosso (€68m + €9.45m + €60m) = €137.45m
8. Force India (€49.5m + €12.2m + €68m) = €129.7m
9. Sauber (€44m + €9.25m + €50m) = €103.25m
10. Manor (€0.5m + €32.5m + €50m) = €83m

TOTALS: (€1025m + €599m +€974m) = €2598m
income from sponsors, then partners and then from TV/FOM...

Note: these appear to emanate from a Spanish newspaper so could be fiction.

As I'm sure we all know f1 exists primarily as a marketing exercise, so I can't see how fewer viewers can make it better value for money,

Mind you there has to be some very imaginative marketing figures being Trollied around at the top, I mean surely if f1 was worth half the budget of the top teams, people would be falling over themselves to sponsor the smaller teams.

I suppose it's actually only winning in f1 that is worth anything,

How much does a venue pay to host a gp?

Again the value will mostly come down to the publicity gained and if f1 gives good value why do places like France,Britain,Italy,Germany struggle to raise the cash.

It seems to me that a few races are paid for because f1 is seen as fashionable, those won't last very long when the going gets tough.

im loving the way people think because BBC drop f1, f1 is doomed?!? F1 doesn't care about the BBC. Its coverage has been **** since they dropped it to Sky. Sky's coverage is far far far better and totally worth the fee (or a trip down the pub to watch it).

On average about $40m a year to host a GP.

15 of the 19 races in 2015 were government backed. The 4 that weren't...? Britain, Belgium, Spain, Italy (and Germany).

.

Great PR for both companies (or VAG as a whole which ever way you want to look at it) in that market - and a lot of people aren't going to care that much about emissions (the people who would notice Le Mans wins etc I mean)

Its obviously hit them big for the last couple of months, is it really going to be a massive issue years down the line - hmmm not so sure

Audi were seemingly already to step into RBR as a partner /factory team for '17 just before the crisis happened (or so EJ/other rumours suggested) - anything been mentioned since? Personally think Audi will go quiet for a few months in regards to F1 but continue what they are doing behind closed doors ready for the '16/17 winter when the scandal wont appear so big after all

Audi and Porsche have cut their WEC involvement down next year, primarily cutting the 3rd car from both teams at Le Man's. They are doing it because money could well be tight inside VAG (Motorsport is the first place they will cut funding from if they have to pay out massive fines) and they have said its not the right image to give off by splurging loads of money on Motorsport at the moment. They have cut the factory GT team entirely.

I sure hope they carry over the majority of the BBC team for the Channel 4 package. Quite like the current team and don't feel the "winning formula" (no pun intended!) needs changing!
