BBC to show F1 from next year

Amazing news. But lets hope they will ahve all the onboard gadgets, the streaming of practice and lets hope they expeand the technical knowledge even more. It should start an hour before the race and instead of rubbish interviews. Show me around the cars and the technology. Especially if manufacturers have added new bits on since last race.

No adverts WOOT..

That's what I hope for too, but Im very very worried the BBC won't deliver:

"There's a red fiery glow coming from the back of the Ferrari! Sorry that's his rear safety light..."

or

'OMG, sorry to interupt you Gabbi, first and second are both coming into the pit to retire................. O no, they are coming in for a pit stop'

And I echo the sentiments of others about the amount of time devoted to F1. Starting coverage 10 mins before the race and possibly not showing qualifying reaaly does worry me.

Although I'm pleased that ad breaks will be a thing of the past (they always seem to occur during an important part of each Grand Prix), I cannot see the BBC's coverage being anywhere as good as ITV's.

For starters, will they even send their reporters to each Grand Prix or will they be in fabricated studio in White City?
I will miss Brundle's grid walks as well.

+1

Ad breaks suck, hope the rest isnt any different though.

I am slightly worried after reading more into it that they might not show the qualifying and do the bare minimum in terms of race coverage

In which case I really would prefer the breaks :(

Can yo lot not remember when bbc had it??? they very if at all showed F1 live they always showed it at 1pm on sunday. Here's hoping they do actually show the races live otherwise its really going to suck even harder then the adverts

yup im thinking a lot of people are forgetting this.

sure the ad breaks suck, but the rest of there coverage is miles ahead of what the bbc did.

im seriously worried about this move...:(

Exactly what I was going to post, people really seem to forget how bad F1 coverage on the BBC really was and just focus on the fact that there are no adverts. However, I'm still excited about this news, as long as they do it properly.

But as has been said, that was 12 years agao which in television terms is a huge amount of time!!!

I have no doubt that the BBC coverage will be vastly different to how it used to be as technology has moved forward hugely. I imagine there will be live coverage of qualifying and practice etc, ok you might need to choose to view it via the red button but that in itself is great because not everyone will want to watch such things so having them take over the main broadcasts of BBC would not be good.

I really wouldn't worry about the quality of the coverage, the only thing to worry abour is the racing... is it anymore exciting these days or is it still all about who's car doesn't break down and who has the fastest pit crew/best stop strategy???

With this being the BBC this may well be shown in high def?

Cant wait if it is, F1 will look fantastic

Mixed feelings.

As said, I too remember being so angry when BBC only showed highlights of away races.

Completely useless.

Having said that, I can't believe they'll get away with doing that. Bernie is hell bent on getting F1 into hearts and minds of our eastern cousins but he won't let F1 be reduced to 45 minutes half arsed highlight shows. If he does GPWC or whatever the manufacturers want to call it wil lbe back on.

Love the Brundle "soapbox" comment. I think they both have a modicum of respect for each other. Just a bit of posturing :)

You obviously didn't watch the Australian GP.

  • Flying car
  • Mechanic mowed down
  • Near-misses in the pit straight
  • Many crazy wrecks and bumps

;)

Certainly missedout on some good stuff there then... what about the raciong tho any good, or just more of the same...ie team with the most money has best car and wins again thus having even more money to make an even better car?!?!?

i know there was talk of several measures that were to be introduced to make the cars more standardised or something to try to make it more interesting, did anything come of this??

Well there is no Traction Control for a start which makes for a far more exciting race, and a few other driving aids have been removed

It is much better to watch :)

Well, whilst this is good news to be rid of the adverts, that always occur during something exciting going on, I do hope that some of the features that ITV introduced are not lost.

The pit walks have always been entertaining, and the start line walk by Martin Brundle have always been good to watch….. ITV also give a good warm up to the start of the race, it can help to build up the anticipation.

On another note, looks like my BBC licence fee is now not just for Top Gear. So, gives some solace for the huge amount of money I hand to the BBC……

We’ll see, too early to speculate on how much better or worse the coverage will be when transferred to the BBC from ITV.

I'm sure the BBC will ship all the ITV lot over - heck depending on how the deals worked out (I have no idea) they might even HAVE to under TUPE.

The one thing I am concerned about though is that the BBC is consistently getting told off for showing too much sport - how is this going to help? I worry that they'll cut this back to the bare minimum time shown so that they don't anger Ofcom any more than they already are.

I can't help but question that comment, I don't usually watch the pre race build up but on sunday I tuned in ahead of schedule. What did I see? Lewis Hamilton canoeing and an attempt at an interview with Kelly Osbourne.

I can accept the canoeing may have been of some interest to someone somewhere, you know the stalker types who want to know what the drivers do all day. But there is no excuse for showing Kelly Osbourne on the telly, my eyes weren't built to deal with that abomination. Plus she didn't have a clue.

The BBC will film in HD, I'm convinced.

If they've been shooting b-grade welsh sitcoms in HD for the past 3 years then they'll want to have the F1 in HD.

@valve90210... Only 8 cars finished, 7 legally, 1 of which was disqualified :D

yep, the new rules means that cars are cornering a bit like moto gp bikes with the back end sliding all over the place. I'd say the rules probably favour the newer driver. established pros seemed to be making the most basic mistakes. Kimi was off 3 times through poor driving and massa just dumped the rear end in the first corner for the same reason.

I can see that changing though mate don't worry

As I have a feeling that F1 in HD was a big factor in BBC getting the license back

It would certainly make sense, they have the HD channel sitting there lacking content, they have aired all their other sports coverage (wimbledon, world cup etc) in high def.

This is a huge win for them they cant screw it up by only showing it on the SD channels :/
