BBC to show F1 from next year

Why does everyone hate James Allen so much, he gets some things wrong for sure, but i think he is pretty good

He's gotten a lot better, and there are certainly worse commentators in the world (John Motson), but he used to get on my **** banging on about fuel ALL the bloody time and his pointless comments/observations.

James Allen just comes off as a bad Murray Walker clone with crap material. Same sort of thing as Richard Hammond in the 90s when Men and Motors tried to make him ITVs answer to Clarkson. Shoe didn't fit and he looked a tit.

Murray is a national treasure - funny, interesting and a very nice bloke. His Murrayisms are legendary, because they're unintentional and then he realises what he just said.

James Allen as a commentator is shouty, patronising, and just ... well ... annoying. He gaffes aren't funny they're just ... wrong. How on earth Martin Brundle resists the urge to rip him to shreds I'll never understand.

On the other hand James Allen the writer is articulate and seems to know the sport inside out. Watch him interviewed on say the Lewis Hamilton documentary at the end of last year and he's totally different. Maybe he just needs to sit down with a brew and think things through rather than spouting verbatim straight to the nation.

How about...chuck the Top Gear team in?

"Coverage will be influenced by the success of the Jeremy Clarkson-fronted Top Gear when the five-year deal begins next year. Dominic Coles, BBC director of sport rights, said: “When Lewis Hamilton did a test lap on Top Gear it got more viewers than the Brazilian Grand Prix. Bernie was very impressed with the Top Gear proposition and there will be cross-fertilisation between the show and the races.”

Clarkson and James May, Hammond’s co-conspirators, will also join in the grand prix fun but insiders believe “The Hamster” has a special affinity with drivers after his crash.
" -- The Times Online

That is the most cringeworthy thing I have ever read :/ Yes I love Top Gear but there is a time and place for slapstick comedy and a serious sport like F1 isn't it.

Hammond would be good for the show if he was the overall face of it, the "now it's over to you, Tom" type guy. But please please don't let Clarkson near it :/ He just isn't serious enough to present F1.

I don't like the way the BBC seems to be rushing this. They have got a year to thoroughly plan the best way to create the show. Why jump to conclusions about bringing in the Top Gear team to do it all?:(

The Chain or nothing.

And no, Murray is way past his best now. Keep Brundle and pair him with one of the Five Live team.

And the Top Gear Trio would be disasterous.

A few years ago when I still watched F1 I came to realise that Martin Brundle is a terrific guy to have in the box. Not only does he have the experience of modern day F1 racing, he also knows (knew...) a lot of the drivers on the grid and had a fantastically dry sense of humour. "Michael eased past to lap that Sauber as if it wasn't there, much easier than Coulthard found it. I'm sure it's pure coincidence that it's got a Ferrari engine in it". He also used to have Murray Walker in stitches sometimes when he'd correct his mistakes with a sarcy comment.

Because he's driven most of the tracks on the circuit, he can give you a real insightful talk through when riding on-board with a driver. He doesn't just tell you what you can see, he tells you what is going through the driver's mind at the time, and prepares you for upcoming bends, cars etc.

The Brundle/Walker combo was brilliant.

I'm not that excited. The coverage on Five Live can be quite poor like at the last GP, they decided to only give us the last 5 minutes of each qualifying phase. For the rest of it, they had some guy talking about golf.

The BBC should definitely get Martin Brundle as his insight is fantastic. Steve Ryder isn't my favourite presenter but at least he has enthusiasm for the sport so he will do. Also F1 wouldn't be F1 without Louise Goodman interviewing DC or Mark Webber halfway through the race after the Red Bull breaks again.

Anything but The Chain as the theme. It is a really boring tune, the only reason I can think of it coming back is nostalgia. The sport is in a different era to when the BBC last had it, let's move on instead of pretending that those days are still with us. Nobody would want the rubbishy 90s intro video back so why the tune?

Steve Rider is incredibly smooth (ooer missus) - a great anchorman for any sport.

Brundle will definitely be back to the BBC. Personally I think Murray's past it now, and I don't think James Allen will go with Brundle back to the beeb - there was definitely some tension between Brundle and him this last GP, Brundle was looking to criticise everything Allen said (and rightly so - Brundle has the experience).

Excellent post. :)

Brundle is an absolutely brilliant commentator for the exact reasons you say.

Legendary. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what the BBC do with the coverage - hopefully they'll give it as much and as prominent TV time as ITV do. I'm definitely going to miss itv-f1.com tho (unless it sticks around, which seems unlikely in its present form)...they've really got their act together this season with the live video and all.
