BBC to show F1 from next year

ITV haven't lost the coverage, they made a commercial decision to terminate the contract.

Apparently they have an option to terminate the contract at the end of this year despite being 3 years into a 5 year deal. The BBC were approached by Bernie rather than it going to tender.

Interesting - cheers. ITV are losing vast quantities of money atm so I guess they just aren't making enough profit on F1. I just hope the money saved doesn't go towards more football for ITV Sport - their football coverage is abysmal.

so happy about the news :), mainly for the loss of adverts - cant remember far back enough to realise bbc did a crap job of f1, in my view it was the best ever! so.. bringgg it onnnnn

The only thing I can see that's good about this whole thing is that there'll be no advert breaks. ITV did an amazing job I just hope we don't lose out on the commentators.

My mum just said, "Does this mean they will bring Unchained Melody back instead of the racket they play at the moment". Bless her for trying and she was half right!

Can not imagine the BBC coverage will be the same as the last time they had it and am sure Bernie Ecclestone would not be happy if they did not show every qualifying and race live on BBC 1 or 2. That would be the quickest way to lose the coverage again.

Hopefully they do not bring James Allen across but I would not mind seeing Martin Brundle back again. David Croft does a fine job on radio 5 so my vote goes to him (if I had one) for main commentator. I am sure Murray Walker will be doing one or two races too.

I consider the Beeb's sports broadcasting and presentation to be superior to ITV's. For instance, their minimalist MotoGP coverage is head and shoulders above ITV's F1 offerings - none of the usual pre-race filler crap (see cooking at home with bland driver x).

An improved F1 show is predicated on the following (in my opinion).

An absence of TV ad breaks.
An absence of that **** James Allen
Actually, an absence of the entire F1 ITV line-up (minus Martin Brundle of course).
Ben Edwards.
Suzi Perry.
BBCi and iPlayer integration.
Some sort of synergy with the Top Gear programme (I'm not sure how, or even how frequently this would be done).

But of course. :)

Huh?

They NEED to keep Martin Brundle onboard though, he's by far and away the best commentator/pit lane interviewer that F1 has ever had.

It wasn't crap by a long shot. I thought the first couple of years ITV had it that it was terrible though, they had a football pundit fronting the show who obviously knew nothing about F1 at all and it was just really badly done. Granted, it got better after a couple of years but I'm very excited about it going back to the BBC. This will be their flagship sports programme and I'm sure they'll get it right.

It's very difficult to compare the ITV and BBC coverage now. People's expectations of sports broadcasting have changed dramatically with Sky's increased market penetration, ITV have moved with this and hence have moved away from what the BBC provided. It's fair to assume that the new BBC coverage will be as in depth, if not more so, than the current offering.

Regardless of who the local broadcaster is the actual race coverage is out of there hands and the quality of that has improved in leaps and bounds since ITV took over. I can remember the days when you only had two or three onboard cameras in the entire field which only worked on half the circuit. If those cars were involved in a crash at the start that was it, no more onboards. The BBC coverage never had lap split times, G meters and all the other fancy on screen graphics so their coverage will always look poor in comparison.

I'm sure the BBC will have some idea of what the people want.

At least I hope they do :(

Watch a few archive tapes from ITV's "best" and just keep it ad-free would be enough for most. If they can build on it then all the better!

Just heard on Radio 1... Murray did say he'd think about coming back if he was asked, but somebody would have to ask him first :)

Can you imagine, if he came back we would have more of these:

"Into lap 53, the penultimate last lap but one"
“Fantastic! There are four different cars filling the first four places."
"It's raining and the track is wet"
"He is shedding buckets of adrenalin in that car"
"This race will actually develop into a Grand prix"

:)

i believe now all the on screen timing, g meters etc are all provided by Bernies FOM TV arm. ITV simply steam the race to you from FOM trucks. Its up to the channel to add there own like some US shows do i think.

I don't see BBC coverage been any worse than ITV. But if they don't have the right F1 team then they aren't gonna fair so well
