BBC vs Lineker

Sack him and anyone’s else that follows him . Millionaires living in ivory towers shouldn’t have a voice to air whilst employed by us ( the taxpayer ) .

1 FA cup win doesn’t make you the best football pundit either. If this isn’t an example of why the BBC should go fund itself I don’t know what is .
Does that include all the other tory stooges working at the beeb, who like to make political statements.

Yes.

In this day of age forcing people and harassing them on thier own door step to pay a TV licence is ridiculous.

For all the complaints about the beeB being full of right-wingers it always seems to be the left wing hanging onto it.

Its viewership gets lower and lower.

None of my girls have watched live broadcast almost their entire life. Oldest one has just moved out. They dont even have areials.

Gary has the right to say what he wants but peope shouldn't be forced to pay his wages.

He gets paid well over 1million.

This made me chuckle.

Happy days.

Gary Lineker and BBC management have reached a deal to get the presenter back on air, after the weekend's disruption to BBC Sport schedules.

Director General Tim Davie says: “Gary is a valued part of the BBC and I know how much the BBC means to Gary, and I look forward to him presenting our coverage this coming weekend.”

In a statement, Davie also announces the BBC will launch an independent review into its social media guidelines, with a particular focus on freelancers outside news and current affairs like Lineker.

Gary Lineker says in the statement: "I am glad that we have found a way forward. I support this review and look forward to getting back on air."

A few of us have said for a while now the BBC has always been pro sitting government, but on this occasion it has become too blatant and obvious, they ignored Sugar's anti union comments as well as other pro government comments, they also didnt mind Linekar been political about the world cup location, but for a while journalists have been leaving the BBC because they were not allowed to criticise the government, and now finally someone has stood up to it, will see if Linekar backs down though.

I'm still astounded every time I remember he is getting paid £1.3m to do...MotD. Does he do anything else for the BBC or is that it?

Anyway Lineker 1, BBC 0.

It was never likely to go any other way once all the other people the BBC use for football coverage dug their heels in.

Lineker has won. The BBC are the ones backing down.

As to political opinions, the BBC has ignored his tweets until he compared the current government to the Nazis. That was the reason he was pulled. Not for sharing an opinion but for going too far. Long term this will damage the BBC I imagine. The whole thing has been pretty damaging however it shook out though.

A) The BBC isn't funded by the taxpayer.

B) All politicians are funded by the taxpayer and many are millionaires.

Nothing wrong with his tweet its an opinion, dont have to agree with it. The BBC showed that they didnt like the government been compared to the Nazis.

Ironically its backfired for them I think as the news reports drawn attention to the comment, and a lot of people have come out in support.

I don't place any stock in what celebrities tweet and I couldn't care less which end of the political spectrum you sit on. He is a (very) highly paid figurehead for an organisation that derives the majority of its funding from the TV license which relies on people opting to pay it. Having someone voicing very strong opinions that are polarising on social media from that position isn't good in my opinion.

I agree that he overstepped the line despite the fact I agree with his sentiment on this issue.

The problem is if you feel he overstepped the line, they then need to be consistent and withdraw various news articles they have published and also have a word with many other of their staff, thats the problem when you try and draw the line.

Far simpler to just say that the views of its staff are not the opinions of the BBC and be done with it. As long as Linekar complies whilst he is on air, then there should be no problem.

Thats a nice line but ultimately the views of your employees, when strong enough do impact you as a company. Its like my local climbing wall says "hold may spin". That doesn't mean they won't get sued when one does because they didn't install it properly. There is a reason companies don't like people they pay lots of money to airing controversial views to large audiences.

Whether they'll just go down the Sue Barker route and not renew his contract?

The handling of it all has been shambolic

I doubt it. There isn't really a justification for his salary at the moment unless I am missing all the work he does outside MotD (which I may well be).

The issue is that they couldn't replace him with someone else and then pay them less. They would either replace him with Jenas or a female lead, both of which would cause an absolute storm if they were paid less than Lineker.
