BBM equivalent

My current BB 8520 contract is about to expire. I had pretty much decided to get a 9800 Torch, but I'm getting tempted by the iPhone. The whole family have BBs and we make a lot of use of BBM. Is there anything I could use to similar effect between an iPhone and a BB? Or even an Android phone and a BB?

Facebook chat, everyone is on it thesedays. There is a decent FB chat app for your families BBs, I use it, but its paid.

Whatsapp seems to be the best for both platforms although the iphone version is much mroe better than the BB version ie more options and looks nicer. I have whatsapp on my BB but hardly use it if ever...i do use whatsapp on my iphone4 to keep in touch with my non BB friends which there are about 3

BBM is the number one reason under 20s buy blackberries (and thus subscriptions to blackberry internet service), While nothing is impossible this move strikes me as super odd and unless people were forced to pony up cash/subs for the service. I have a hard time believing RIM would sacrifice one of their most sacred cows.

If they do release an app for android and the iphone then would pretty much dominate the mobile instant messaging market, thats a darn good position to be in tbh.

Yep, love whatsapp, would gladly pay the paltry fee when my free year is over. kik was looking good but the lack of blackberry and random choices in sharing/avatars has made it harder and harder to back.

Not really hot on bbm myself, people rave about it but whatsapp is pretty much on top of it and superior in ways. Hopefully if they do bring bbm to android they will not charge an arm and a leg.
