Bear Grylls

still got to do the SAS training even for the TA...they dont let you in if you can't hack it

it may be a reservist outfit but you still have to be ready and trained for active duty

Bear Grylls fell 1500+ feet in a parachute accident, broke his back, then climbed Everest.

Ray Mears eats grubs.

And in a survival situation I'd go with Ray Mears as being the more likely of the two to actually help you get out alive. Bear Grylls' programmes are designed for the shock factor more than actual bushcraft from what I've seen but they are reasonably entertaining. I'm sure he knows his stuff but if he attempted some of the things he does for the show in a real survival situation he would more than likely end up dead.

Na, dont agree. Ray Mears knows his stuff but I just dont think he could hack it.

who said he didnt? my comments were aimed that the people stating bear grylls is much more of a military orientated survival expert than Ray mears when in reality hes not.

Why, what part of the forces was Mears in?

A reservist regiment of the SAS. Does such a thing exist? Im a banker but if needed I can kill a man with a piece of paper.

Yep 21 and 23 regement SAS are both TA units who go through all the same selection and traning a full time SAS soldier would

He isn't and wasn't as far as I know but since he teaches the armed forces how to survive or has done I'd have to say he is pretty good.

If he knows his stuff (and we've agreed on that part) and is physically fit enough (an extra layer of fat is likely to help up to a certain point in a survival situation) then why would he not be able to hack it?

Survival is not just about physical fitness, its about mental hardness. From viewing Ray Mears I PERSONALLY dont feel he can.

and if I was in a plane crash in the andes..I would want to look across and see Ray mears...not only for his survival skills, but if he perished in the crash it would feed me for a month!

and Ray mears does survival courses for all branches of the armed forces...in particular pilots who may have to live off the land

There's just something about Bear Grylls that annoys me. Maybe its because he's a bit too over the top and slightly too posh for that kind of thing. Maybe its because he reminds me of Ben Fogle (who I also can't stand).

Ray Mears is miles better in his presentation style.

PK!

I find Grylls annoying mostly, granted his show may be entertaining, but I hate how extreme he makes things look. I would rather watch Mears.

Not many people are aware of 21 and 23 SAS and presume its only the FT 22. Been active with the guys from 21 (Newport) quite a few times but thats another story that I will not go into.

They do come from other regiments TA or regs and do the same training as 22 but some of the 21 guys like the sun glasses and brag a bit. They do a dam good job and work in the same theater as 22.

Regarding Bear, yes he was in 21 but did his back in and now runs around acting like a lemon and sleeps in hotels when the public thinks he's the real deal.

Knows his stuff yes but Ray Mears his what you call the "Educator" been there and done it and trains a few regs in regards to survival techniques.

Regards.
