And in a survival situation I'd go with Ray Mears as being the more likely of the two to actually help you get out alive. Bear Grylls' programmes are designed for the shock factor more than actual bushcraft from what I've seen but they are reasonably entertaining. I'm sure he knows his stuff but if he attempted some of the things he does for the show in a real survival situation he would more than likely end up dead.
There's just something about Bear Grylls that annoys me. Maybe its because he's a bit too over the top and slightly too posh for that kind of thing. Maybe its because he reminds me of Ben Fogle (who I also can't stand).
Ray Mears is miles better in his presentation style.
PK!
Wind your neck in. What's pathetic about a Civilian who can pass SAS selection?Pathetic.
Survival is not just about physical fitness, its about mental hardness. From viewing Ray Mears I PERSONALLY dont feel he can.
Bear Grylls' programmes are designed for the shock factor
Sir,
The recent alleged "revelations" that Bear Grylls stayed a night in a motel whilst on location filming for Man Vs Wild/Born Survivor and that some of his feats of endurance are being questioned for authenticity, leaves me irritated.
Should we really allow jealous local survival experts, past their sell-by-date adventurers and disloyal expedition organisers the time of day in print to attempt to discredit a man attempting things most of us wouldn't dream of doing and providing great entertainment on the small screen to boot.
If Bear Grylls were a fraud, as some of these detractors would have us believe, then I'd be the first to know. I witnessed first hand his paramotor flight high in the Himalaya, served in UK Special Forces alongside him, rode a jet ski around Britain with him and stood on the summit of Mt. Everest next to him.
I can assure you and your readers that he is the most courageous, honest, generous, fun, mischievous, caring and loving family man I have ever met.

That's the thing, if he wants to present these types of programmes he has to have a different angle to Ray Mears, he can't just copy what R.M has been doing for the past 10 years. So it seems to me that he's altered it for a younger audience. What i'm trying to say is that his programmes may not neccesarily give him the chance to show off normal survival skills which leads some people to doubt him.
Just shut up.
selection for TA SAS is different from normal SAS afaik.
Think I was told that the TA can spread selection over a year opposed to doing in the normal timeframe.
Still have to be fit **** though.
