Bear Grylls

He may have served in the World's greatest special forces, he may have sustained and recovered from a serious back injury but he's still a bloody fake on his TV shows! I heard that he only stays at hotels without lifts, that way he has to use the stairs and thus is always out of breath when the camera pans towards him. :D

Ray Mears is the better of the two by miles.

That video's pretty hilarious :D

To be honest, I'd rather be with Mears, since his knowledge seems to grow exponentially upon meeting new people - he seems to be in touch with nature and able to sort himself out, with any given situation.
Grylls I'd rather be with in a war.

And in a survival situation I'd go with Ray Mears as being the more likely of the two to actually help you get out alive. Bear Grylls' programmes are designed for the shock factor more than actual bushcraft from what I've seen but they are reasonably entertaining. I'm sure he knows his stuff but if he attempted some of the things he does for the show in a real survival situation he would more than likely end up dead.

Bear gets out fast or dies.

Ray would make himself comfortable and offer his rescuers a cup of tea when they find him :)

Different training and skills I guess - although I'm sure both of them 'fake it' a little bear hams it up as well which puts me off.

There's just something about Bear Grylls that annoys me. Maybe its because he's a bit too over the top and slightly too posh for that kind of thing. Maybe its because he reminds me of Ben Fogle (who I also can't stand).

Ray Mears is miles better in his presentation style.

PK!

Spot on, can't stand Bear Grylls, especially as his name is a sodding animal, just makes him a complete plank!

Another vote for Ray Mears here, I prefer his style too.

I've seen odd clips of Bear Grylls but I've never bothered watching a full episode.

That's the thing, if he wants to present these types of programmes he has to have a different angle to Ray Mears, he can't just copy what R.M has been doing for the past 10 years. So it seems to me that he's altered it for a younger audience. What i'm trying to say is that his programmes may not neccesarily give him the chance to show off normal survival skills which leads some people to doubt him.

I like both they are both scripted shows certainly what i see of Ray Mears docs aswell but its mainly for camera.

Dont know if anyone reads his blog but here it is :)

Someone who served with guy and knows him

Sir,

The recent alleged "revelations" that Bear Grylls stayed a night in a motel whilst on location filming for Man Vs Wild/Born Survivor and that some of his feats of endurance are being questioned for authenticity, leaves me irritated.

Should we really allow jealous local survival experts, past their sell-by-date adventurers and disloyal expedition organisers the time of day in print to attempt to discredit a man attempting things most of us wouldn't dream of doing and providing great entertainment on the small screen to boot.

If Bear Grylls were a fraud, as some of these detractors would have us believe, then I'd be the first to know. I witnessed first hand his paramotor flight high in the Himalaya, served in UK Special Forces alongside him, rode a jet ski around Britain with him and stood on the summit of Mt. Everest next to him.

I can assure you and your readers that he is the most courageous, honest, generous, fun, mischievous, caring and loving family man I have ever met.

To me its just usual media grabbing a story and trying to beat Grylls down i think he explains really well his side of story. Cant discredit guy ability and what he has behind him he certainly knows his stuff.

Anyway look forward to new episodes coming. :)

I don't doubt the mans survival skills as such and I'd agree that he has to take a different approach to Ray Mears but I'm just not so fond of the presenting style and the fact that it doesn't really show you the skills that he has properly. From what I've seen of the programmes there is a lot of "well I'll just jump in/attempt this risky manoeuver" which looks much better on camera but is much more likely to get you killed/injured than a more considered approach - although with the backup that both men will probably have around for their shows it matters less than it would in a real survival situation.

I think Telescopi summed it up fairly well.

Have to say I enjoy both Ray and Bear's programes ,they are diffeent enough to both be very watchable(and learn from) and I am sure both of them really know there stuff it it actually came down to "having " to survive.

People are taking it a bit too far, and not really understanding what's being said. People are comparing both of the guys, they are doing so; because they're good at what they do. However, some comments suggest that Bear Grylls is a complete novice and it's definatley not the case. Ray Mears is better in my opinion, just hs whole style, but some of the comments suggest that one is a novice and one's an expert. Grylls passed S.A.S. selection, so he's certainly no novice.

selection for TA SAS is different from normal SAS afaik.

Think I was told that the TA can spread selection over a year opposed to doing in the normal timeframe.

Still have to be very fit though.
