Bear Grylls

I'm sorry but Bear Grylls ***!!!!

Bear is more entertaining...

And ^^ as mention above

I like this analogy:
Bear would escape from a forest if he was dumped there, where as Ray would make a house and live there...

If I wan't shock factor and mild entertainment I'll watch Bear Gyrlls. However I prefer to be educated without the OMG!!!111oneoneeleven he's drinking water from elephant dung. Hence I watch, and enjoy, Ray Mears.

The thing is Mears seems to be good in forests and knows his plants and roots and things like that but in an extreme situation (mountain or desert) Grylls would win every time. In harsh situations you need to move quickly and be physically fit. Mears know a lot but is fat and I can't see him being able to climb or cover a long distance to shelter before nightfall.

Mentally I think Grylls has the edge too - army and everest - has Mears ever really pushed himself?

Love watching Bears Survival show, some classic entertainment there.

Mears just bores me but then again, I do have a short attention span.

Evidently you haven't watched much Ray Mears. He's done more than one desert episode in his survival, as well as both polar climates and a mountain episode. He may be "fat" but it's still pretty obvious he's extremely fit. As well as that, his rainforest and knee-deep snow walking shows he can cover a hell of a lot of distance; he's not some tubby flower-picker. In a survival scenario it would be Mears every time.

Regardless of just how much of Mears' / Grylls' shows are scripted and controlled, Bear annoys the hell out of me and Ray doesn't. I love watching Ray Mears, as he goes and makes use of nature without destroying it. When I went to the rainforest in Indonesia and saw this sort of thing first hand in the locals (and in our group trying to replicate what they were doing), that's the type of survival you're after rather than some ham-handed approach.

Bear is more entertaining to watch than Mears.. but there is some kind of smugness with Bear that makes you think and know that no matter what danger he makes out to be in, and how 'dangerous' he claims the place is.. he has a squad of people with him off camera to light the fire, turn the heating on in the tent, with a sat phone and radio to dial in a pizzahut.

Having said that I do find it entertaining to watch! More so than Mears, the way Mears is directed I find quite slow paced and quite dull when watching.

That video of Bear was very funny btw :D.. kinda confirmed what I thought.. but ah its good tv I guess!

Grylls sneaks off back to hotels when he's finished his filming.

Bruce Parry beats both Mears and Grylls, but if I was stuck in the middle of no-where I'd prefer to have Mears with me; as soon as he'd built shelter and a fire and kill him in his sleep, as there is a lot of meat on those bones and you wouldn't have to go hunting for a while....

Bear Grylls show is more about what disgusting things he'll do to survive in the wild, whereas Ray Mears show is more about the craft of using nature to survive out in the open. They're both good though, kindof like brain Vs braun in comparison. Id rather be stuck with Mears though as i couldnt stomach elephant-poop juice with a side helping of raw warm zebra.

Check out these videos of a similar situation - building a snow cave. Both give almost identical information (Bear actually gives more) but Ray has a helper, shovels, a saw and a candle for comfort. Bear has a bit of plastic and his bare hands.

Ray

Bear

Anyone watched this on Discovery channel? Hes like Ray Mears on crack

Slicing a camel open, gutting it then lieing inside the carcass. Also drinking water straight out of its stomach and squeezing partly digested food to drink the water out of it!

Been watching Bear Grylls and Adventures of Mark and Olly - World's Lost Tribes all weekend.

Best TV ever

He also squeezes elephant poo to get the water out of it :/

Ray Mears helps train the special forces and the army IIRC.

He's like Yoda to Bear Grylls' Obi Wan.

its the truth!

Yea but if you notice Bear's cave sucked ass, it was cold and started to break during the night whereas rays was sealed away from the elements and warm enough to sleep in I would rather be with ray in an emergency :P
