Been asked to "DESTROY" a hard disk drive... best method? ;o)

Harddrives are quite hard to destroy... we had an old one here, we beat it with a baseball bat first, then shot it with an airrifle a few times, drove over it with my car, then dropped it from a second story window.. it was slightly scratched and a few of the chips had fallen off the PCB, but apart from that, no major damage! We had good fun doing it though, wasted a few hours of my life:D

If it has classified imformation on it, surely you have the correct equipment on site to dispose of it with out all the mess?

And if you dont........ (no i dont work in the military/FBI etc.)
Then who else is there that can classify imformation?

Or do you just mean it has highly confidential info on it like customers credit card info?

And why have you been asked to dispose of the info on it when obviously you are not qualified to do so?

There are specialist companies and equipment to do so, you dont just ask some one in the office.

All the above meant nicely of course, reading it, it looks a bit aggresive but im not very good at wording things:)

chuck norris and a roundhouse kick should sort it ;) failing that take it apart and goto your local school and ask them nicely if you can use there D&T workshop to sand the platters

Why go to a local school :| All you need is a vice and a power sander. Not sure any school would let some randomer come in wanting to trash a HDD lol

He might not own a vice and a power sander i know i dont :p :D and schools these days seem to be letting anyone in to teach so why not to borrow their sander

Throw it away?

The idea is to destroy the data on the HDD completely and utterly so not even a magnetron can read the data. Chucking it away as is leaves it open to be stolen and have the sensitive data recovered.

As for the Black Hole... it's a bit boring. At least in a supernova you get a good show :D

And you happen to know when the next one is occuring... ? :p ...and not one that happened millions of years ago that we jst so happen to see now.

Anyway, on a more sensible note :p - I distinctly think taking out the platter and sanding them down followed by incineration would destroy it. When I say sand, I mean all the way down. Bits of the magnetic surface should be sufficienty scattered to make recovery impossible.

Why not just take the disks out, smash it up a bit (they are quite brittle) and put a few shards a week in your bin. Should be pretty secure that way!
