We chatted about where we were working etc... and out of no where her boyfriend walked out of the Kebab house, said "don't talk to my girlfriend" and hit me in my jaw/lip (which is now swelling up quite nicely lol).
I then walked off to my brothers car and rang the police and gave them the car's numberplate and luckily i know the guy's name as i actually went to school with, and now work with his sister and i know that he has a criminal record and has been inside before.
Why do people do this? I was harmlessly chatting to an old friend and he obviously got jealous.
How far can i push this as i want to press charges and take this as far as i possibly can.
As i said, he has been inside before and has got a criminal record so what is likely to happen?
The police will be round my house tomorrow morning for a statement etc...
I'm not in pain really, i'm just annoyed that their are people around who do this and it really bugs me that they are not inside for longer

After reading the O.P I was going to respond like everyone else and say press charges but considering what sort of person you are I'm gonna say this

Indeed, Andy you obviously have a reputation for hitting on attached girls, so he saw you chatting to his, and pounced.
Still an over reaction on his part, but you can see his mentality behind it, you seem to have no respect for other peoples relationships, so he was simply showing no respect to you.
If you're in no pain, I would just count this a lesson and realise that your actions will always have consquences, even if they come back to you a bit indirectly.

Spoke to the police, gave my statement.
The guy has a criminal record as it is, and they will be arresting him shortly. I'm suprised that the police have actually done something with this.
Will see him in court i guess.

Come on, there is no excuse to lamp someone however much of an idiot they are.
The OP has kind of been shown up as not someone I would trust with my GF, but either I trust my GF or I don't. I still am not going to assault someone for talking to her whoever they are.
Someone who's first reaction is physical violence needs to be dealt with severely.

Similarish sort of thing happened to a mate of mine a while back - he was giving a lass he knew a lift home and the drive goes through some country roads. On the way he notices he's being followed. He drops the gal home, then drives back to where he was staying. He tries to avoid small lanes but is cornered in by this guy out in the middle of nowhere, who gets out, runs up to my mate's car and hammers on the window. This guy then told my mate that he'd smash his face in if he ever saw her with the lass again.
