Being Fat / Getting Fat..

I wouldn't say 'FAT' but at just over 30 and 6'1 in height, I was horrified to see the scales say 14 Stone the other day, I know it is incorrect to base it all on stone, as some people are heavy, yet still skinny - I am a size 36 Waist, which I think is too big, and should be 34 really - it's a sad day when you cannot fasten the top button of a 34 Waist trouser if you have worn that size for years!

Anyway, I went from a job, that basically had some moving about, not a lot, but some, to a job that is basically sitting at a desk all day, I used to eat LOADS in my old job, big baguette and a packet of crisps etc but not put on weight - admittedly I hate cheese (apart from on pizza oddly) and also NEVER have things like sauces (ie the dips from dominos) so I think that helps and mainly drink tea/coffee, not fizzy drinks much.

Anyway! It is really just my belly that I need to tone down! So I have decided to completely cut out beer (even though I only drink 1 big bottle (the cobra-size bottle) a week) and try and not snack on unhealthy snacks.

I also bought one of those 2in1 elliptical bike things, and I figured that, even if I did 15 - 20 minutes a day on that, it is still more exercise than I would usually do - not to mention, the 15-20 min daily on that, was probably more exercise than I did at my old job, so I shall wait and see!

I refuse to give up my Indian take-away on a Saturday night though! Although might start making it myself with healthy ingredients.

See this is whats missing from my life, the buzz...

If I had the buzz after excersise it would make it so much more enjoyable and easy to do, but its just never happened. Other people keep mentioning but I simply end up feeling knackered and sweaty. :(

I got that buzz from footie. I struggled to find a replacement when I stopped that. The Gym never did for me at all. Cycling and swimming though I do enjoy.

I'm enormously fat and can put it all down to buying my first WoW subscription all those years ago. And subsequently spending the next 6 years of my life in front of a computer

I should point out that I meant I've always done some form of exercise and managed not to be fat, but just recently I'm doing a bit more.

"Some" exercise and "a bit" more being 300 mile cycle...? ;) I'm going to assume your the right side of 30 aswell. You've a knack for understatement.

I found weights followed by a moderate mile on the treadmill was an awesome buzz. Almost tempted me to get up early enough to visit the gym before work and carry that buzz through the day. Almost ;)

you don't suddenly wake up one day 10 stone overweight with a BMI of 40+

That is half the problem, you put the weight on so slowly and gradually that you don't realise what's happened until it's too late!

I've been up to as heavy as 24 stone, and more recently as light as 14st 10 (at 6ft4in)

At the moment I'm hovering around the 15/15.5st mark due to the festive period of drinking and over indulgence and also the lack of cycling due to the crappy weather. I still feel in control of my eating and size at the moment and I am choosing to be "naughty" with my eating and I know the extra weight won't stay on. As soon as the new year hits I'll be actively looking to lose weight again.

I'm 5'8" and weigh 95kg.
I'm large, but not fat. Not sure on my actual sizes but wear 34" trousers and large tees :)
I eat on average about 4k calories, most of which at night in the form of takeaways. I cycle a lot, and have a fairly physical job. I don't drink, or smoke.

If i cut down on the amount of junk i ate and tried to eat throughout the day i would lose weight pretty quickly. Quite happy with how i am though, mind you...losing weight would help with cycling :P

I'm 25, this last year has been a MASSIVE step up in exercise levels, so from 0-24 my statement stands, I had actually completely forgotten about the bike ride however.:o

And even if I'm an unreliable mofo everything I said it true, you don't need to do masses of exercise and eat only terrible food not to be fat.

I gave up alcohol a few months ago and have found the weight easier to lose. I found the gym boring, but do weights at home now and again plus run with a mate now and again. Kickboxing and kayaking is something I enjoy so do them whenever possible. It's easier to stay healthy by doing exercise you enjoy. I haven't joined a gym in years and never intend to again.

Weight is quite easy to control basically all very simple maths......

Calories in vs Calories out!

Losing weight is so incredibly easy! People just need to keep it simple and think in terms of numbers and it just drops off. Oh and yes I do know what I am talking about as I lost 10 stone....... went from 21.5stone down to 10.5, just kept it simple and weight dropped off so fast, think I went from 21.5stone to 15stone in the region 5months!

Now I am so active with swimming, weight training etc I struggle to keep the weight on! Especially now im really pushing for some muscle mass, but its the biggest mind mess up to try and eat so many calories to build muscle! Im eating in the realms of 5-5.5k a day, 7 days a week.

Just keep everything simple and its all maths!

Quite interesting readings about other people's weight problems as I struggle myself.

As a teenager I was in the school team for football, rugby & tennis but became very fat through massive over eating. In my late teens I went on an epic diet and went from 20+ stone to 11 stone but at 6"2 it was not a good look.

Over the last 8 years or so I have been into weight lifting and boxing but still really struggle keeping the weight down because as soon as I'm injured or ill I revert from my very clean body builder style diet into fat ******* mode. An example of this is earlier this year when I hurt my back and then had a throat infection that I couldn't get rid of which resulted in 18lbs of weight gain in 3 months.

I've tried very, very hard to change this behaviour but at the age of 29 I know that I will never be able to "eat what I like". The only change that I have yet to make which would help in keeping my weight down is to stop drinking alchohol. I drink at least 8 pints per week, every week, and if you add the calories up over a year this equals at least 20lbs of useless calories!!

Hehehe. The difficult part, though, is to not eat the (bad) foods which will make you fat in the first place. The will power.

Myself, I am a chocoholic. I can quite easily eat a few KGs of chocolates in a single night...without feeling sick. I identified this problem and have not eaten a single chocolate bar or chocolate sweet (like roses or quality streets), for over a decade. I'm sure other people have similar problems with other foods, however, they cannot resist them.

You must remember that the diet/health/fitness industry is worth £billions/year. If you ever watch the telly late at night or early in the morning, you will see adverts for slimming/exercise products. This market is HUGE. Lots of people want to get in shape. But most find it difficult.

You and I are similar in that we have the will power to do things necessary to lose body fat. However, most people do not possess this. Most people like to eat bad foods and binge eat during Christmas (something which I have never been able to understand). Many people also have addictions to alcohol, which also adds to problems controlling weight.

If you believe some of the posts earlier in this thread, they will tell you that alcohol beverages do not contribute to weight gain ;)

Can you not quit drinking altogether?
I have an addiction to chocolate and found it easier to completely quit eating chocolates, than to reduce/control my chocolate eating.

You may find it easier to go teetotal than attempting to control the alcohol intake. Just an idea.

I eat plenty of burger, and cakes while spending plenty of time in the gym thanks :P

You see, many people believe McDonalds and their burgers to be junk food.
I actually believe that burgers are bodybuilding food and great to eat if you want to get stronger (combined with weight training).
A Big Mac has 2 burgers (red meat), making this high in protein.
The only ingredient I would remove is the cheese...otherwise I don't see a burger as being junk.
Fries/chips are definitely junk.

For me, Pizza is the absolute worst (fast) food you can eat, if you want to control bodyfat.

It's compounded by the fact the body tries to metabolize the alcohol before fat stores in the body.

"Drinking alcohol reduces the amount of fat your body burns for energy. While we can store nutrients, protein, carbohydrates, and fat in our bodies, we can’t store alcohol. So our systems want to get rid of it – and doing so takes priority. All of the other processes that should be taking place (including absorbing nutrients and burning fat) are interrupted. (1)"

And then there's bitch ****. :D

"Alcohol is directly toxic to the testes, causing reduced testosterone levels in men. In a study of normal healthy men who received alcohol for 4 weeks, testosterone levels declined after only 5 days and continued to fall throughout the study period (17). Prolonged testosterone deficiency may contribute to a "femininization" of male sexual characteristics, for example breast enlargement (18)."

Not really the issue though! It still all comes down to maths you can still eat your daily calories requirements in pure rubbish (chocolate etc) and not get fat!. Myself I burn a lot everyday and eat a lot of rubbish as well! (I love COOKIES!) however I still make sure to get in a lot of good proteins and good carbs as well as the bad stuff, if you burn it you can eat it! Simples :)
