Mac filtering + WPA

WOW

Ok, I have given it a fairly large WPA key... Ridiculously large actually.

I have also set it to ONLY ALLOW certain MAC addresses. Given that at this time, I only actually need one PC to talk to the thing, this only has the one MAC address.

Seems to be doing the trick?

Im almost annoyed in a way cos last night, because I was able to access a shared folder on his PC, I was dumping a load of stuff onto his PC, in a kind of hope that he would not have realised that he had left that open to me.

Anyway, I know I moved about 8GB of stuff, so who knows?

I like that idea of that LINKY

How will that work then? Do I need to have Linux as an internet server or something?

Looks great fun though!

I will have a play with one of my Linux boxes and see what happens???

Thanks a lot guys.

Computer Misuse Act 1990 (c. 18)

Ring the Police & report him, they will confiscate his PC & find evidence of what he's doing - I very much doubt he will get his hardware back & if they do find proof you will be able to take him to court.

you dont need a massive WPA key, it will only serve to slow your network down. 16 characters should be good enough, no way he will crack that any time soon.

If he had total access to your pc, maybe he read your history file and know your posting on here. It could even be one of us on this thread.

Beware the low post count!!

personally id have created a bat file that copied across a new hosts file from your PC to his.

screw that hostfile so that it keeps re-directing him places

and call it readme

harmless but effective :D

Police are a good option - especially with the whole text file thing. Kind of precludes pretending they weren't aware.

Alternative would be to turn off wireless and use ethernet. Problem (and many others) solved :)

not to mention impossible.

it's not at all impossible

just have to share the file you want to copy onto his PC

he could be intelligent and edit the bat file instead of reading it, but hey if he's a stupid script kiddie he may fall for it.

amauture networking noob here, but can you not set up your router to only accept certain ip address and block others.

i know my router can deny certain ip addresses at certain times of the day or deny them completely.

no point blocking IP address'

he can just change that quicker than i've just typed this sentence

you need to enable what is called "MAC Address Filtering" whereby you say. nothing can access my network except these MAC addresses. You then select the MAC address of the 2 network cards in your own 2 PCs

a MAC address is a unique number given to a piece of networkig hardware

to do this you need to go into the setup of your router

chances are it will be called "MAC address filtering" and be under the advanced list of options. Post your router model if you need help on finding it :)

to find the MAC address of your network card, click start >> run >> cmd >> ipconfig /all

in the resulting text that prints out, its in there :)

As has been said, he's already been on the network so probably already knows the MAC addresses of the clients. He can spoof the MAC addresses and get in regardless.

I'd drop a file into his shared folder saying that the police have been contacted and he is being reported for contravening the Computer Misuse Act 1990 (c. 18). Then I'd call the police and actually report him.

No point in mac address filtering at all. You can see the clients connected to an AP and their mac addresses so all you need to do is clone their mac. WPA/WPA2 with a strong key is the best and only defence needed.

you have to be actually connected in the first place to see it

which if MAC address filtering had been enabled from the start wouldnt have been a problem ;)

i get what you mean tho, locking the stable after the horse has bolted and all that

this should have course be used in conjunction with a strong WPA key :)

Yes, this is what I really want, and now that the missus has seen this tw4t is constantly using my internet, she is agreeing with me... I only really need Wireless because she does not want wires all over the bedroom, bu tt he thing is, that there is a cable going from the kitchen, all along the skirting, up the door, around the kitchen and living room doro frame, along the ceiling of the living room, and then down to my PC... There is also a cable going from my PC ( and router ) all the way to the Lan room... This cable might I add is completely invisible unelss you know what you are looking for ( trunking ).

There is plenty of room for another cable and only need to add trunking in the bedroom.

Yes, been there and done it.

He gets around this, and I too am a noob but I know it can be done fairly easily.

Yes, he could spoof the MAC ADDR but so far, he has not been connected since last night... Or at least I cannot see him???

It is of course possible to simply hide himself.

Too early to say, but me dumping a load of stuff onto his SHARED folder last night has probably shown him that I have at least soem access to his PC.

I dont know why, but I keep hoping that perhaps he only had about 8GB left on his C: and I have filled it up and somehow his PC crashed... I could happen... Unlikely but you got to hold on to some hope like that I suppose?

I have not seen him today, so who knows?

Police? - I know I could, and should, but at this time, this is NOT going to happen. I enjoy breathing... Ive been doing it a long time now and dont plan on stopping.

To be honest, the one thing I would really love to do, is simply do to him, what he has clearly shown that he can do to me.

Trash his system

I think he is the kind of person who knows what to do with a running PC, and do it well to be fair, but I dont think he would know what to do should the PC go down??? - like a good driver who knows nothign about mechanics sort of thing.

Anyway, I have downlaoded a load of docs ( Still getting them ) on about just this sort of thing... Hacking in through MAC addresses and so on, so I will see if they help me do a bit of counter-terrorism ( Is that acceptable? )

I was under the impression that you an see the MAC's of clients even if you're not connected - it's just a question of having the signal strength between their wireless card and yours.

Then again, it's been a while since I've dealt with wireless at all so I could be remembering things wrong.

Either way, false economy defences like MAC filtering/disabled SSID broadcast only server to give you a false sense of security. Stick to WPA. Or ethernet.

I'd go old fashioned on him.
Stick a load of Dog crap in a brown paper bag. Put said bag on his doorstep and light it and ring bell. Retreat to where your camera is and watch him come out and stamp on it. Hopefully he will be bare foot.

Childish Yes. Hilarious Yes.

Revenge is a dish best served in a lit paper bag containing dog crap :p
