you have to be actually connected in the first place to see it

which if MAC address filtering had been enabled from the start wouldnt have been a problem ;)

i get what you mean tho, locking the stable after the horse has bolted and all that

this should have course be used in conjunction with a strong WPA key :)

Not so.

It's simple to view all the IP addreses associated with an AP without connecting. It's also very simple to get the WPA key. But cracking or decoding the key can be hard if it's not a word that can be found in a dictionary. Use any common word, no matter what its length and it can take seconds to guess. So use a phrase that isn't a word and you'll be fine. Change it at regular intervals too.

I've found that using WPA-TKIP with a hidden SSID, and a 13+ character non-dictionary alphanumeric key has kept intruders out so far...

MAC filtering and Changing/Hiding the SSID. Rubbish really.

AirMagnet, Kismet and spoofing MAC's is easily done.

WPA2 or Just a long WPA key will do the trick.

That's what i had always thought until i tried it myself against my own AP, there were the macs of all the connected devices clear as day even before i had connected or even tried to start cracking the key :/

I didn't go as far as spoofing the mac as i didn’t have mac filtering enabled, all i did was crack the wep key (which took about 10 minutes)

Since that day i've never used WEP, mac filtering or turned off the SSID. The latter two are a bit of a PITA to administrate anyway

I'd go old fashioned on him.
Stick a load of Dog crap in a brown paper bag. Put said bag on his doorstep and light it and ring bell. Retreat to where your camera is and watch him come out and stamp on it. Hopefully he will be bare foot.

Childish Yes. Hilarious Yes.

Revenge is a dish best served in a lit paper bag containing dog crap :p

That is so childish and immature...

Do you think you are big talking like that?

Do you do this at home do you?

You think everyone is laughing with you, well they are not... They are laughing AT YOU.

Its not big and its not clever.

...

Besides... I dont have any paper bags! :D

You had me going there right up until the last line.
Thanks :p

No, it was the SHARED FOLDER that was on his PC... I could not get anywhere else?
:(

Tried blocking all other IP's except the ones you own in your software firewall?

i am so surprised not many keyboard warriors have joined this thread so far lol.

No mention of knocking on his door and battering him with a logitech g15 lol.

Seriously i think you have done all you can,

A decent wap key, i wouldnt bother with mac address filtering as that could make things harder mate, If he clones a mac address your used to seeing you wont notice him on the network.

I suggest changing you lan ip address. Change the scope on the dhcp side of things. so if your using 192.168.0.2 onwards change it to something like 192.168.3.X its soooo common for people with home networks to use the 192.168.0.X address.

Also change then ssid then hide it.

Im going through a few thigns right now... Well, earlier on anyway, and I have gone on the MAC idea, but it might not be the best option... Not for security, but rather for me having to go round my kit making sure that its the right MAC address... Its done now, so that jobs done, I have told the router to let those through but nothing else, and I have set a fairly sensibly sized WAP key... 18 chars. Anymore and it will get silly I think.

Blocking IP though? I think that this, like MAC addresses can be spoofed fairly easily. All the same I will be tryign out anything and everything should the git get back on... Actually, if he does manage it now, I will just disable Wireless altogether!

I rather think I need to set the IP for each PC rather than have them dynamic

Then I will know which PC is which.

This PC for example will be 1 my main PC upstairs will be 2 the wifes Number 3 and so on.... This way if thre is another one that I cannot account for... There will be my answer!!!

Ok sweet guys.

Could get some powerline homeplugs for *almost* wire free home networking that he'll not be able to get into.

Although thats more money it'll solve your little intruder problem without any hassle and make your missus happy because you dont have cat5 cables trailing all over the house.

LOL I looked into those some time ago... Some good few years ago Im sure??

As I said though, the Wires are not "Trailing" as the missus keeps saying.. They are well hidden and absolutely invisible unless you know what you are looking for.

go around his and give him a good hiding, smack him all over till he bleeds :) he wont do that again haha.

No , seriously just hide SSID, and use mac filtering.

You mention he has access to all your files, do you have your shared folders set-up to allow everyone?

The way I set-up my shares is to only allow my user account full access to them, and a couple of other user accounts only have access to a limited amount of folders.

For example, on my laptop I have the same username/password for the login as I do on my main PC. So when I try and access any shared files on the PC I can do so without being prompted for a login name. On PCs I connect to my network temporarily (a friends, or I'm fixing them) you get prompted for a username/password to login to access any shares because their own account doesn't have permission.

If you have multiple users on your other computers what you can do is 'mirror' their username/password on your PCs and add those accounts to the shared folder permissions if you want them to be able to access them easily.

Try turning the wireless 'power' down so it just covers your area and not as far as him.

That will cripple transfer speeds though.

The police can't do anything without any evidence, it could be anyone on the street for all they know, and even if they did seize his equipment, it's likely they wouldn't find a trace.

is that possible ?

Dont call the police, dont waste there time. Just enbale mac and wpa - its all been said.

Police around here????

Let it be said right now, that unless Im in my car and they have a camera handy, they are not interested...

Mass murder? Thats up to the Met.

Mobile phone while driving? - Then you are obviously an undercover cop on an important mission.

31MPH in a 30 Zone... 6 Points!
