Being underpaid at work

Greater responsibility should equate to greater pay.

Not always. I'm pretty high up in my firm and of the 100 or so people below me there's a fair few who get paid more than me despite my having way more responsibility. Generally the market rate for a given role is the biggest influencing factor in pay.

Having said that, at the employment end of the spectrum the OP is at the choice is pretty clear. Politely talk to your boss about a pay increase. Forget about the other person and explain why you do a great job and are deserving of it. Or secondly go and find another better paid job.

I'm paid £12,000 less than my colleague that does the same role. Note, my site has won numerous "best in europe" awards since I joined, continuously leads the business for performance.

53p an hour is nothing!

Raise it with the boss and state your case :)

You're a supervisor and you're only paid £8.32? I get paid more and i'm just a general dogsbody without the hassle and stress of being a supervisor. :)

I suspect that a church cafe isn't all that stressful even if in the position of being a supervisor.

Anyway it seems more like the colleague is overpaid rather than the other way around, instead of getting minimum wage the colleague is getting subsidised by a government grant.

I think you are underpaid in general. You should start looking for a new job, not because of this pay issue, but because £8/hr is not a low wage you want to be on for long.

No law is been broken, and I think it would be dodgy if they paid him less then that grant amount.

One of my old jobs I was an agency worker, and I found out the agency staff were paid more than the permanent staff even tho they were lower down in the pecking order. Sometimes it happens when you have situations of different entities paying the wages.
