He's had failures, nothing down to him, at some point you're talking about getting a 10 grid penalty later in the year when he could be on pole, where as he has a terrible car that isn't working well that has damage and he's at the back.

Waste the engine and finish 12th and take a 10 grid penalty maybe in the final race of the season?

He's a winner and he's thinking about maximising points later in the year.

Yeah, I think that is the pace Hamilton would be on without a damaged car, with the way this track is poor downforce at the back, it's going to hurt his speed in all these fast corners which kills his overall speed down the long straights. It's a damaged car that is so slow it is even a problem catching the 10-17th guys, let alone fighting for points later on. He might get 1-2 points, but he could potentially save a 10 place grid penalty at the end of the season, it's a very good idea to retire, you also can take a free gear box afaik if you do so.
 
Did Coulthard not watch his own build up programs where they showed the significant downforce that Raikonen was running compared to Alonso...
